How much fun can it be having an unwanted kid or an STD or AIDS? the title of this thread should be:

"Are you a selfish unthinking prick or not?"

Far too many people only think in the now and address their own personal pleasure as a priority.

I had the "Gentlemens Operation" years ago, if i had to hook up with a new sexual partner you can be damn sure I'd still use a condom until such time as we both knew neither of us was a health hazard.

A partner's status can change over time due to a number of factors. Would you put your life at risk banking on that your devoted partner didn't stray, even just once?

Never said that. The two posts I referred to were about "new" relationships, and you know as well as I do that essentially you sleep with everyone the other partner slept with their entire life.

If you've hooked up with someone new, and you're getting a bit of nooky, realize that he or she's been giving and getting with more than just you in the past.

Just when does a new partner become "safe"?

checkmark  In this day and age, there is no excuse for putting yourself or your partner at risk. Nothing scares/saddens me more than listening to younger folks these days say, "Oh well, I talked to him/her, and they told me they were clean, so it was ok. . . "

Quoting AeroWesty (Reply 12):

Age old question. You have to make a judgement call at some point. Ours was six months and being tested (for everything) together.

My only reservation about making a judgment call is, if 50% of marriages end in divorce, how many of those broken relationships were because of the partner straying? In uncommitted relationships, the figure could even be higher.

The odds just don't work on one's favor.

Yes. It's called trust and being faithful. I could be wrong - I hope I'm not. But that's how I live it.

When I get serious in a relationship, these are things we talk about. One of the rules is "be faithful, and if you can't, be honest enough and tell the other one - it's better to break up than being dead". It's not difficult IMHO.

Yup, and it's unfortunate for everyone that every person doesn't take that stance.

When it really comes down to it, I don't really care if someone makes a personal choice to put their life at risk (as long as it's not around me). It's just I don't like to hear people say "but we're faithful" instead of "I'm taking a calculated risk that I understand the consequences of if the odds go against me."
