5K Run On New ATL Runway...Who's In?

Apparently they're having a party and a 5K on the new 5th runway that will open at ATL on May 27. The party/5K will be held on May 20.

Could be a fun time for A.netters (and a rare opportunity for primo spotting!)

Sounds like a good time. I ran in last year's TEB 5k run (& plan to again this year on July 15). This ATL 5k race will kick the TEB one in the dirt (or asphalt, in this case) because one will be running near the big guys (heck, even a FL 717 dwarfs a Gulfstream jet).

There's more descriptive info. and an on-line sign-up form here:
http://www.atlanta-airport.com/defau...anta-airport.com/search/search.asp

However, there seems to be an error in the Waiver part as it makes reference to an Atlanta Women's 5k race (IIRC, that takes place in the City of Atlanta):
I assume all risks associated with running in the 2006 Atlanta Women’s 5K including, but not limited to falls, contact with other...

But then it states:
...your accepting my entry, I, for myself and anyone entitled to act on my behalf, waive and release Hartsfield-Jackson from all claims or liabilities...

Looks like someone fell asleep in the editing department. That's the first time I've seen a major blunder of that type on a waiver/release form.

Caution: once in this link, one does have to type 5k Run and do a Search to get to the form in question.

If I go, I just gotta book a flight (from PHL) and stay at a nearby hotel/motel.

For the TEB race, there's specific instructions on what to bring and, yes, one does have to go through security (at one of the hangars) in order to get on the apron to pick up the race packets. The TEB race starts & finishes at the apron near one of the hangars and consists of running along several taxiways and up & back Runway 1-19.

Info. on that race can be found here:
http://www.oymp.net/Raceinfo/teterboro_airport_5k.htm

I should be ready for that. Let me know the details and I'll try to get set up for it.

The link you provided's not working for me.

I walked the airport the day before it opened when all the employees brought their families over. That was pretty cool.

Ian,

I had to go back-and-forth through the link to get the info. (ATL's web-site could be a little more user-friendly). Anyway, here's the info. currently available (from my first web-link & Search):

“Community Day on the Fifth Runway”
Saturday, May 20, 2006
7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

5K on the Fifth Runway Fun Run
7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

Experience the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run on a 9,000 foot runway before it opens! Bring the family and enjoy this 3.4 mile event and say you were the first to run on the Fifth Runway. Once operational, you will never have another chance to walk on this strip of concrete.

Community Day
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Come one, come all to touch, see and feel what a 9,000 foot long, 150 foot wide runway looks like. A host of activities, musical performances and concessions will be available for all ages.

Oddly enough, on the sign-up waiver/release section; there's no listing regarding the cost (most races, the participation cost ranges from $15 to $25). Maybe that info. will be posted later.

I might be able to fly to ATL that Friday evening and get a late Saturday flight back to PHL. The only glitch with staying only one night at a motel/hotel is that most require guests to check-out by 11 AM. After running a race, one will want to shower & change clothes before heading checking out the additional Community Day Activities on the airfield. I know for the TEB race, they don't allow people to exit & re-enter the airfield multiple times. They only allow a one-time entering/exiting; then again, at that race, most people leave following the awards ceremony (which took place around 9 to 10 AM). I wonder whether ATL will be planning on setting up a specific entry/exit away from the terminals for this event (obviously, the new runway & surrounding area will still be barricaded from the adjacent active airfield)? The ATL race seems to be a little short on the info. & necessary logistics to pull this off.

Before I sign on the dotted line so-to-speak, I would need to know that stuff.

Most 5k races I've participated in allow walkers as well; some even give out awards to the fastest walkers overall and per each age category (usually in either 5 or 10 year age increments).

Quoting DL021 (Reply 7):

Ian, I may take you up on that offer. How far are you from ATL? I plan to book either a Friday night/Saturday night flight itinerary or a Friday night/early Sunday morning itinerary depending on logistics & fares; this will probably be the most expensive 5k run I've ever invested in LOL. For last year's TEB run, the only extra I had to pay was a motel room the night before the race.

Keep me posted.

For the community events that follow the race, I wonder if DL will have a plane parked nearby & open for people to tour in. One of their 777s would sure draw in a crowd.

If I could go I would. I'm an avid runner in my spare time and am still trying to break 16 minutes on the 5K (my PR is 16:45)... But right now I am kinda in Germany and it would be hard to get over there without paying a crap load of money (which I don't have) and take time off from school (which I can't afford in my senior year). Good luck to whoever is running in it though...  bigthumbsup

The top time for the TEB 5k race was 14:52 set back in the 2001 race.

Needless to say, since it's a flat course (as we all know, planes don't do hills) the ATL race would be a good one to go for a PR. Since this race will only be done once, the first place finisher will hold the course record for life.

As for me, I haven't seen sub-20 minute 5k times in years. In 2 races last year, I got close (20:12 & 20:13) but no cigar. I'll be running a local 5k race this Saturday morning (I ran my last 5k race last fall on a very hilly course in Haddonfield, NJ); the time I get in that race will indicate where I currently stand timewise.

Okay, I did a little more digging and discovered another glitch in ATL's website regarding the race. As Star Trek's Scotty would say,"This website must've been put together by monkeys."

Anyway, in the area where one fills out their name and so forth (located just below the erroneous waiver/release information); there is no Submit icon anywhere on that particular web-page.

I finally called the Customer Service number, to which I was directed to call the Public Relations number in an effort to get more detailed & accurate information and to comment about the current problems & issues with the web-page. I was directed to call the 2 individuals that are in charge of the event. I left my name & number on both of their voice-mail mesages; hopefully I will hear from one of them soon. They might be a tad suprised/shocked that someone from Philly is interested in running in their race.

I will keep you all posted.

I clicked through the original link and discovered that the 5k race links (found via a Search) are presently disabled. That may mean that it could hopefully be in the process of being modified & updated. Maybe my earlier voice-mail message(s) was heard, investigated & corrective action is being taken.

Stay tuned.

However, when I clicked the Submit button, I received both a Thank you for submitting message along with an Error message. confused

I'll wait until Monday & see whether I get an e-mail response; and then I'll call to verify that they received my info.

Bring the family and enjoy this 3.4 mile event and say you were the first to run on the Fifth Runway.

So which is it? A 5k race (which equals 3.1 miles) or a 3.4 mile race.  duck

Most 5k races I've participated have an entry fee that ranges anywhere from $15 to $25. I would expect that a similar fee will apply for this one. Maybe, they'll tell you (via e-mail) after you fill out the info... assuming the Submit icon is working.

Quoting Kovi17 (Reply 19):

I've only been at one 5k race that had a walker restriction and that was that one had to complete the course under an hour. The reason for that was due to a parade that was scheduled to take place later that morning; the race was in conjuction w/the parade. So I'm sure walkers will be allowed... just don't trip any of the runners racing on the return leg (I'm assuming that the course will be basically up-and-back on the runway).  Silly

From the on-line application:
Age* (2 digits only)

You mean to tell me that nobody over 99  old  will be allowed to participate?
That's age discrimination! Big grin

Seriously, I've seen guys (& ladies) in their 80s do 5k courses. They may not be very fast but hey, the fact that they can still get out and run that distance is an accomplishment nonetheless.
