Ok, first off let me say that while im a non-smoker, I dont care if you do.

But every night I work with a certain co-worker she goes out about every half hour/ 45 mins between 4-8 for about 5 mins for a butt break on top of that she gets her regular 20 min break. Now as a non smoker I take a leak once or twice and take my 20 min break, but when I'm gone for say 25 minutes, she raises holy hell. Ive spoke to my manager as this is not the first time she has done this and she was also caught smoking in the bathroom several times. Plus the fact that she is on the clock and leaves me alone while busy. (its a supermarket) Now the question is why is she allowed to go off and smoke and I get bitched at for needing to take a piss?

Ok, rant over.

Being totally sexist . . . that's women for you! You need to put your foot down here and the next time she tells you you've been 25 mins on your break, give her a breakdown of her smoking times. That will shut her up.

When I tried that, my life was made a living hell. Women smokers and their breaks. It's like their breaks don't count. If you mention it to them they will destroy you.

Simple, for every smoking break she takes that is not part of her normal break schedule, take an equal 'breathing' break immediately following her return.

Man up! Geez, you need to tell her like it is if she b1tches at you. If you're going to tell her that you're taking as much time off as she is then you'd better make sure you're right (a watch would be your best bet) and then hit her with the facts.

Kick her ass, you don't need to be told what to do.

It's a well known fact that smoking stimulates the synapses, therefore increasing intelligence and productivity over a 30-40 minute period.

Therefore whatever productivity is lost during smoke-breaks is made up when the smokers return from said break and are much cleverer than everybody else.

Actually a Danish company gave non-smoking employees three paid off days a year extra, because they said that the smokers used up about the same time with their smoking breaks! Big grin

I worked in a grocery store for four years with plenty of smokers...Most of them would split their single 15/20 minute breaks into several smaller breaks to allow for more smoke breaks...I suppose they may have been on the clock and not working more frequently than us non-smokers, but it was never really an issue. Your coworker sounds like quite the smokestack...

In the department I work in, I'm the only one who doesnt smoke (there are 3 others). I always end up taking a longer smoko break when its time. Once did a 30 minute break.

Stop complaining about the smokers! We can't smoke in planes, in (too) many parts of the world we can't smoke in bars, restaurants or anywhere else, so let us have more breaks than you non smokers!  Wink

I feel for ya Cadet-- been there done that-- when I was working full-time the ER could be going to hell with phones ringing, computers sounding, radio going, and half of the staff would be outside smoking. If the nonsmokers of the lot never got a lunch break you could bet that the smokers had been out at least four or five times in a twelve hour period....very frustruating!!!!!

A recent report showed that the average "coffee break" was longer than the average "cigarette break".. as a non smoker I can accept that is true.. catch is every place I worked the smokers took coffee breaks AND cigarette breaks!

2x 10 miniute cig breaks a day is 100 minutes a week... x 48(average working year in Aus) = 80 hrs that is an extra 2 weeks time off work that smokers feel they have a "right" to.. guess they deserve it considering how much the smoking is shortening their life.

I meet with a few freinds at a local pub for a drink every few days, some smoke, local laws dictate that some parts of the pub must be non smoking! If one dares to suggest that we drink in a nonsmoking section for a change it is like you are the scum of the earth for daring to suggest it..and have no right to even contemplate such a thing. The arrogance of smokers in as much as it is their right to pollute and spread their 2nd hand smoke just irritates the shit out of me.. I just go home!!

Ok, per suggestion of others, I took a few notes last night. She went out 3 times for a total of 20 minutes plus a 23 minute break, I went out ony my break for 19 minutes and went to the bathroom for 5, break was off clock but paid time but she was gone for a total of 43 minutes! roughly about 6.75 in pay(no, we dont make much, but it puts gas in my car til i start at DL) I spoke with my manager and the situation was spoken on at their meeting, they are deciding what to do now...
