I hope our A.net Indian friends can help me on this one. I have accepted a job as a Continental Express dispatcher. Between now and the 24th of April I'm essentially on vacation. Even though Express Jet is doing business as Continental Express when I make the change from CO to BTA I lose all my built up flying privileges and start over so I want to us the vacation passes up.
I am thinking of flying to India to see the Taj Mahal. I'm trying to see a couple of places around the world in a hurry otherwise I would research this myself. I see both Delhi and Agra are located pretty close to each other, 200 miles or so. Should I take a plane, train, bus, or rent a car? Can the trip be made in one day i.e. leave Delhi, get to the Taj Mahal, do the tour, and get back to Delhi or do I need to get a hotel room in Agra? Any suggestions on hotels if one is necessary? Doesn't have to be 4 star, 2 will do. Do I need a visa to enter the country? How big is the Taj Mahal site? Should I hire a guide in the city or is their a guided tour on site?
Like I said above, I'm trying to arrange several trips in the next two weeks so it's not that I'm lazy, just trying to hurry up the planning stage. Thanks in advance.

Well if you want to rough it, you can fly to Delhi and hire a driver service to take you to Agra. Though Indian highways are an "experience" it might be hard on someone who has never been there. Though you would get to the the rural parts of India.
Maybe some of the posters in India can be of better help.
Lodging is generally cheaper in India so I would stay at least at a 4+ star hotel compared to the US. Jaypee Palace Hotel in Agra was very nice (when I went in 2000).

Well I have heard that the travelling by road is only a couple of hours slower by train, really there is no need to travel on a plane, a train is probably faster, and buses for a tourist, just forget about it
look to travel in a train or a car, I would say travel in a train it would be best for you. If you are about to travel in a train then take the express train. It gets you there in around 3-5hours
