Never stayed there, but there area where it is (Blue Lagoon) has several hotels overlooking Rwy 9 (which is used mainly by cargo). You can always go to Squadron 94 (or is it 54?) which is on the other side of the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) and have lunch and listen to live ATC.

Stayed there. Very nice. A French chain for the hotel was a slight bit of European charm (i.e. Perrier on the limo bus). I dunno about runway views though, but the room I was in certainly did not look directly over the airport.

94th Aero Squadron has a great parking lot if you have the glass to shoot planes 1/4+ mile away (and no police hassles).

As far as staying at the Sofitel, I dunno, it's further back then the aero squadron, and you'd need a telescope to get anything cool, and depending on how hot it is, wayyyyyyy too much haze. They do have an AWESOME Mother's day Sunday brunch  Smile!!!!

Sofitel MIA is a decent hotel, recently remodeled ... Sofitel is my favorite hotel chain (for now, until I discover more luxurious ones lol).

You can ask for rooms facing the airport, they face runway 9R used mostly for landings. Good view but far for photography.

Here are some links to some photos (suite):

Yes, I've met some people while spotting at that location. Actually, if the winds are in your favor, that is a great place to be to spot a/c landing on rwy 30.

If you have time you can drive up to FLL and go to the Aircraft Viewing Area which has some loudspeakers with ATC chat.

IM me if you want directions to get there.
