This year, the leadup to 4/20 was very quiet, no whisperings or articles in the local paper about what campus admin planned to do to counter it or anything like that...its no secret that Boulder is one of America's pot capitals, so 4/20 is something of a huge event here...although I don't partake in it, its always an interesting thing to watch...
In past years they've tried to stop it, but after spectacular failures like last years "Let's turn on the sprinkler system at the traditional gathering field and hope that keeps them away" attempt (student solution: Bring out trash cans, place them over sprinkler heads and sit on them, and smoke away), I would've thought that admin would've given up this year and just let it happen...not so much apparently...
When I went to class at 12:30, I took my usual route which goes right by the field where the largest gathering happens (typically thousands of people in past years), and I was somewhat appalled to see signs up all around the perimeter fence indicating that the field was closed, under "video surveillance", and trespassers were subject to sanctions and prosecution...
When I left class at 1:45 and headed back that way, the situation had escalated to include an army of roughly 40 rent-a-stadium security staff (Argus) guarding the unfenced entrances to the field and 10 or so university police watching it like there was some kind of national highly classified secret hidden inside...
Im not sure whats going to happen at 4:20 PM itself, but it might be entertaining so I think Im gonna go back to campus with a video camera and check it out...
So college students, hows the 4/20 happenings on your campus today????

Not a "this year" post but--
One year I was in Reno on 4/20, and thought it'd be fun to see what UN-R did for the day...Nevada being a pretty paranoid state about demon weed and all.
Sure enough, it was a sad affair--a few tables with medical marijuana and "legalize it" info, a vendor of hemp stuff, and everyone, literally, checking over their shoulders to see who was spending valuable time watching them.
Kind of a yawn, so I walked back to Virginia Street, passing through the student union...and everyone was staring at the TV sets there...looking scared.

Ok, it was insane...got back to campus around 3:45,a huge mass of students was gathered around the perimeter, but the rent-a-stadium ushers and real cops were still there...3 sides of the field are fenced in, but there is an open end, and that end was protected by police-style barricades...around 4:00 or so, one guy just gets up and starts smashing and destroying the police barricades...3 real cops eventually go and arrest him right in front of me (got a great video of this!!!!), but the mob uses this opportunity to take back the field and let the celebration begin...
Here are some pics...hopefully I can process the video of the start and get it on youtube soon...
Bear in mind it was a clear, cloudless day in Boulder today...perfect weather...
Overview of the crowd...hard to get a good angle on them, no raised terrain nearby...
Don't shoot the messenger, Canadians!
One last overview...
Hopefully I can get that vid up...its great

My school had a barbecue, and since I am a campus security officer, I can safely say that surprisingly we didn't catch anyone smoking pot here. Oh, we also had increased patrols of the dorms so we could smell if anyone was smoking, and even there, it seems like anyone who wanted to smoke was off campus.

Oh, my.... As a pizza delivery guy, I look forward to April 20th. They usualy just shove a handful of bills my way and leave me alone. The worst this year was third floor of a particular apartment complex. All anyone needed to do is hang out in the hallway and they would be very very happy

Oh man, up here in Humboldt County, CA, everyone is always high anyway, as this is the chief Marijuana producing area in the Nation. ON 4/20, people from all over showed up and went to Redwood Park in Arcata, right off campus, and just got high all day. Keep in mind, this is Hippyville, and Marijuana smoking is legal on the Arcata Square. The 4/20 celebration was huge though. Big turnout. I don't smoke weed, but it was interesting to see the large turnout/festival.

haha, great video...
Here at the University of Iowa and in Iowa City, there are a few pot smoker type folks (haha), but the majority of students here are relatively sublime (how ironic that i would use that word to describe kids who don't smoke pot) suburban white kids whose main vice is alcohol as opposed to any kind of "illegal" drug.
So I didn't really see anything at all alluding to 4/20 on the campus of UI.
