Finally - My Own Place!

OK guys.. I am bubbling over here, I can't tell you how excited I am. For the first time in my life, I've got my own home! No more roommates, no more noisy upstairs neighbors having sex at 3 am, no more property management companies that don't give a shit. A place of my own!  bigthumbsup

So I got the job in SLC that I was telling you all about, and I start there May 15th. After a week or two of checking craigslist.com everyday, I found just the place I've been looking for. It's a duplex that's all of about 2 minutes from downtown SLC. It's got the convienence of location, but it's such a quiet sidestreet that I don't feel like I'm living in a big city. I'm within walking distance of a ton of restaurants/bars and my commute is only about 8 minutes out to the office by the airport.

I went down last night and met with the landlord for the 2nd time and I couldn't be happier. He's a young guy who lived in this unit during college and has remodeled the place. He's super attentive and very responsive to my needs. I think that's the best kind of person to rent from, someone who really has an incentive to keep the place up.

Well anyway, I've got some pictures for you. Hope you like 'em! I am way excited! I've got the keys to my very own place!

Any advice? What was your first place like? Traps to avoid falling into? Thanks guys.  Smile

Steve

Back of the unit. The unit on the right is mine. Nice off the street parking, common green area, basketball hoop, etc.

http://cc.usu.edu/~stephenh/duplex5.jpg

I really like having the porch for BBQ's in the summer and whatnot. The door on the right leads into one of the 2 bedrooms. I've got the whole east side of the house.

http://cc.usu.edu/~stephenh/duplex6.jpg

Not a bad looking kitchen. Brand new microwave and cupboards. They're intalling a new dishwasher on Wednesday. The only thing I don't really care for is the teal color of the counters. Oh well. (You'll notice the banister on the right. Leads down to a full basement with washer/dryer and more storage then I'll ever need.)

The ceiling fan will be great in the summer time. This is the front bedroom. I think I'm going to turn it into a computer area/home office. (Notice the new paint!)

If there's a knock on the door late at night announcing a Candygram, don't open the door!  silly

Yeah. Always make sure you have enough food and fresh milk all the time. Never let the milk go off!

I'm not much of a milk person, but I'll keep that in mind. One thing I'm never shy on is keeping the fridge full of beer at all times!  Wink

Hey BCA, looks like a good place. You'll like living in SLC. Remember that we're pretty much neighbors (I think only 5 blocks away), so let me know if you need anything. This is a great city!

LOL. My girlfriend will still be up here in Logan; so La Tienda in Idaho is only another 20 minutes down the road.

Fanoftristars - Thanks! I was down there last night and got a great vibe from the place. I'm really looking forward to it. I'll be sure to let you know when I'm moved in and you'll have to show me some good restaurants or something.  Smile

My commute is about 25 minutes just on the (tram) train, which adds up to 35 to 40 minutes all in all. And I live about as far away from the centre as you possibly can within the city limits. The "food" places around here aren't all that great either. I have a relatively busy street in front of my window, plus innumerable children running rampant and screaming all day every day. Good thing my windows are pretty sound-proof once closed.  Silly Oh, and in other parts of the country you could rent an entire apartment for the money I pay for one small room.

Check out Home Depot for information as there is a way to redo the counter tops and cover that teal color and if done correctly makes them look like granite and or marble. Best thing much more cost effective then replacing them right off the bat.

That is a great idea! Thanks so much! I'll talk to the landlord and definitely look into it!

Oy! You poor guy. I couldn't put up with screaming little bastards like that. I met the lady next door. She seems pretty tame. 50-something grandmother that lives by herself, but she seems pretty young and fun at heart. Apparently she has a 12 y/o grandson that's there sometimes who may become an issue, we'll have to see. haha.

Yeah, I feel pretty lucky to have a place like this that has vintage charm, but has been completely re-done. A 2-bedroom for only $695/month is a pretty good deal. I'm happy to have it.

Thanks for all the well-wishes guys! And SLC spotters, be prepared for a housewarming party in the next month or so. I think we're gonna have to grill on that back porch and get some basketball goin' on.

Speaking of, there was a thread about Kelowna lately. Did you happen to see it? I remember reading it and thinking of you. http://www.airliners.net/discussions...eneral_aviation/read.main/2735338/

Edit: Here's the link. Do you really think we'll see a YLW-AMS anytime soon?  Wink
