It appears that in almost every country, law enforcement uniforms/marked vehicles are blue.

Why is this so ?

Not true. San Diego Police have black uniforms and black and white vehicles. I'm sure there are other exceptions as well.

Here they wear beige trousers, khaki shirts and green jackets and hats. Their riot uniform is green, with cargo pockets and a black beret.

Our police have cars of almost every colour, and their uniforms are mostly white and black, or khaki.

IIRC, Germany's police cars are green and white, the uniforms are green and khaki. (Has Hamburg returned to this colour scheme, or are you guys still suffering from Ronald Schill's new uniforms?)

They are however migrhaating to (not flying) blue.

Germany is changing from green to blue...and I kinda like the new look, especially in Hamburg...old uniforms made it hard to take cops serious.

Yep and they have that cool night stick sheath under their arm as opposed to on their belt.

It is pretty hard to not take German police seriously.

No, their uniforms are dark blue, not black. (At least the last time I saw my dads uniforms they were, and he is an SDPD officer). The cares have the rear and fron ends painted black with a white middle.

Otherwise, I dont know why this seems to be fairly standard.

In Tallahassee there is one law enforcement dept that wear khaki with Sheriff's hats (although they are not Leon Cty Sheriffs). They're the ones escorting Bobby Bowden when there are away games. Also, FSU's Police Dept uniforms are grey.

In Colombia, Police (Metropolitan and National) uniforms are green.

Would you take a cop dressed in pink seriously?

Plus, dark blue is a slimming color, and we know how cops like to snarf away the donuts.

In Virginia, the State Police wear gray, the city or county police wear blue, and the county sheriffs generally wear white or dark brown shirts/light brown trousers.

Perhaps the following web site might be of help, but I would suggest that as the colour of the old established police force was established during a time when everyone wore dark coloured clothes, as this did not show the dirt associated with those times

Over here the uniforms used to be blue, but were recently changed to black. Don't ask me why, though.  Confused

Traffic police still wear blue uniforms, though they can hardly be seen under their neon green/orange vests! Big grin

Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

In Wisconsin, local police wear brown or blue. County sheriff deputies wear brown and tan/khaki.

Wisconsin State Patrol wears two-tone blue uniforms. Its Harleys and cars are blue and white.

The NOPD ended a long tradition of light blue uniforms recently as they had to replace countless uniforms stolen from dry cleaners in the wake of Katrina. They have now switched to a dark navy uniform that I think looks nice but most of the officers hate.

New York State Troopers wear purple, which just makes me laugh.
