Considering the high price of gas, would anybody invest in these super-efficent fleet of microcars? It says that soon they will be available for sale in the U.S but that they are all the rave in Europe......

You're right. When the car is up for sale in the U.S. , the Euro-Dollar conversion will really jack up the price of the car, scaring most potential buyers away.....

The car was pretty famous here in Germany when it was brandnew! Now it is several years on the market and people doent buy it as much anymore...
There has been a Smart fourfour and some other things, they already stopped building it... too expensive and not enough people bought it anymore...

I would never buy a Smart, but I must admit that it is a cool car somehow. The quality is good, it was developed by Mercedes and is built in France (shhh, don't tell anyone in the US ) close to the German border...
There is one Smart which was driven 570 000 km (more than 350 000 miles) without any gear or engine change... Quite remarkable for such a small car.
The only drawback is that the speed is limited to around 85mph. Not very funny on a German Autobahn when many drive in excess of 100mph...

But means nothing in the US Question is whether it has acceleration though?

Not the Smart, but I would definetley consider a Toyota Aygo/Peugeot 107. They get better mileage than the Smart plus they have four seats. And it still looks somewhat like a car.
The Smarts were getting popular in Toronto just after they were introduced, but I think its just a fad. They don't make much sense in North America with the easy availability of parking - but I think cars like the Aygo/107/Fiesta would probably sell in North America now with high fuel prices.

What to do with Smart is currently a big headache for Mercedes.
The Fourfour didn't sell and they are stopping production, the roadster has been cut last year. The baby 4x4 has been cancelled and now they are only going ahead with the replacement for the FourTwo.
It hasn't turned out the way M-B hoped it would by any means.

Sadly not well enough - and the FourFour was simply too expensive. However the Mitsubishi Colt which the FourFour was built alongside (as they are the same cars under the skin) will continue to be built in the Dutch factory.

Pass on that thanks. Unless you only use it to commute by yourself to and from a nearby workplace, it looks pretty useless. Sure it may be fuel efficient, but at the expense of all utility and versatility. So then I would need one vehicle for commuting, and another for utility reasons. Sort of negates the whole savings idea. On top of that, I wonder how something so small and light would handle in snow or high winds?
