So I was driving home last night from the theater, and it was slippery outside. Well, I go to turn onto my street to go home, and my best friend, who happened to be behind me, rams my back end, and sends me spiraling to the curb. My back end bumper was mangled, and my front axle was split from hitting the curb. Well, I don't really care about the car, but I am just thankful that my best friend is here today to talk to me. I am kind of upset for her, because this is really traumatic for her. It mangled her vehicle. Basically pushing everything forward. While it is general for it to be her fault, rear-ending me and everything, I think that there may have been other conditions that caused this accident.

Yeh Car accidents suck! I was in one the other week when I was happily on my way to The Man Of Green and some dude decided he wanted to join my lane without looking, causing a hefty scratch on the Hannahmobile.
Well turns out he is a copper whos wife i happen to work with.
Nice bloke. I Tried to con him £500 to pay for the accident (which my father T-cutted) but alas, it didnt work.
He never did call me back to get it fixed .. hmm
At least your friend is Alive..

Conditions might have played a part, but in the end, she's at fault for following too closely. But, that's why we have insurance. Neither of you are hurt, and cars can be replaced  Smile

911, where is your emergency?

It doesn't matter about the conditions. Following too closely, going to fast for conditions, failure to maintain control. While it is your friend, and I would hate to see a friendship end due to something like this, she didn't do everything possible to avoid an accident. Good luck.

Rhaa ! I feel sorry for your combined losses as such a thingy happened to me too.

A couple of years ago, we were coming home with some friends from a afternoon at the karting trhaack, me driving in front with a Mazda 626 (no ABS) and my wife following with a Hyundai Accent (no ABS neither).

Roads slippery and wet (as always in Eire), trhaafic light ahead turns orange. The guy in front me decides he has time to make it through and I decide I can also follow him through. Next thing I know he decides in fact that he cannot *brake lights nastily come on*.

So I attempt to recall what I learnt about threshold braking and after what seems a looooong time of pumping the middle pedal I manage to come to a stop inches from his rear bumper. Just when we let out a collective "whew" in the 626, POUM goes my wife into the 626's rear bumper

Go3Team, We did not end our friendship, which I am thankful for as well. If anything it both taught us a lesson to always be more careful.  Smile

Conditions may have contributed, but the bottom line . . . she is at fault . . . unfortunately . . .

Traveling too fast for conditions.
Following too Closely.
Failure to Maintain Control.

Sorry for your friend - glad you're both okay though . . .

Glad to hear it. Now tell her to hurry up and cough up the money for repairs. Big grin

That's just it Go3... Even though she is at fault, I feel really bad because her parents are going to take this out of her college fund, and she is really upset. That is why I am trying to figure out ways so that she doesn't have to pay very much for my end of it. But if she were anybody else, I'd be screaming SUE.. cuz right now, my back is killing me as is my neck and right arm. But seeing as how she is my best friend, and she got a citation for following too close, I would never put her in that position.

Check to see if your insurance has Medical Expense coverage. Here in my state, the medical bills are covered by your carrier, not the other persons, regardless of fault. Go get checked out, try not to let her know, then she'll have something else to worry about.

If it had been someone else she hit, her parents would most likely take the same action. While not knowing the financial situation of the parents, if they have the ability, would they really let their daughter go to school, run out of money, and not help her out the rest of the way? Right now they are basically punishing her. They really cant put her in the corner, so they have to come up with a better way. Things will cool down after awhile. Its just an accident, these things happen. Hopefully in the future, you can say "Remember the time..." and have a good laugh about it. Things will work out.

Might I suggest you teach UTAette about threshold/cadence braking?  Silly

Go3Team, We've already been planning on telling her kids "Remember when me and uncle jake got into the car accident!" So we're actually having a good laugh about it already. My car sustained about $6,936.00 of damage, well so the estimate says, but the guy said it would probably be more. The thing that sucks is I have not even made my first payment on it. The rental car I am driving is a Scion tC, which is a pretty nice vehicle, but I don't like the way it rides so low.
