For those of you who are/were/ever were a fan of the show, what did you think?

My  twocents : I was impressed that Mr. Wells was able to write an entire episode that didn't have SUVs being blown up or helicopters falling from the sky and landing on people. I thought it was well written and I liked the different subtlties that were included such as the cameo by Aaron Sorkin and the comment "Bartlett" made to "Nancy" about looking forward to "seeing your mother again" as he was saying his good-byes to white house staffers . Obviously in real life, Nancy's mother is Martin Sheen's wife and I think that was a way of saying, "Now that the show has come to an end, I'll be seeing more of her again". I also liked the, "What's next?" comment Santos made to Josh when they were alone for the first time in the oval office as President and Chief of Staff. Was there any doubt that Toby would be pardoned? The only part I wish they had elaborated on was the contents of the note Bartlett left for Santos.

Granted, the post Sorkin years saw some dismal ratings and lackluster writing but it was still sad seeing the show come to an end. Adding to that sadness was the passing of John Spencer and knowing how much he deserved to be in that final episode.

I did find one big error.

Bartlett and Abbey are talking about the date of the inauguration. Bartlett says it was the Founding Fathers who chose the January date. This is wrong. It was originally in March, but moved by FDR to January.

Any president would have known this, even W!

Otherwise, a great ending.

Can't wait now for the series finale of ER. Wonder what they will do, drop another helicopter on County General?

It was a fantastic series finale, but there was too many of the longterm cast missing I think for a finale  Sad

Also, AF1 was flying Bartlett back to his New Hampshire residence at the end, so what was the final shot doing with the aircraft over a vast expanse of water?

why not fly out over the atlantic from washington and turn north?

anyhow, i thought the finale was great. it had its moments like the president giving charlie his copy of the constitution, and the white house chief valet was indeed the real white house chief valet. the idea of bring back so many key characters from the seven seasons over the last few episodes was really a great idea, and they were integrated well instead of just parading them in front of us.

I missed the first 30 minutes...how did they, or did they at all, handle the "hey, our Vice President is dead" issue?

It was interesting to see the first-ever episode again. My goodnes, but they did write a lot of dialogue in the early years! A torrent of words...snappy patter for an hour.

They'll have George Clooney waking up from a nap in the back room to discover the past six years have all been a dream.  Wink

I like the final West Wing, the emphasize on each person and their thoughts and feelings as the change of power took place. I felt like I was there at the moment. I for one will miss the show.

Little if any referrence was made to the VP situation. If I recall, there was some mention about Venick being named as a cabinet member helping smooth the way to get Baker confirmed.

Speaking of the deceased Veep, I thought a tribute to John Spencer would have been appropriate. I have a feeling that was part of the original plan for the viewing hour preceeding the finale' but when the Hollywood egos couldn't agree on a pay scale for 60 minutes of reflecting on the 8 year run of West Wing, it got nixed and we were treated to a rerun of the first episode.

They actually dealt with this a few weeks ago during the two episodes that covered election day itself. Leo was found dead in his hotel room having suffered a heart attack. As of Santos' inauguration featured in the series finale, a new VP had not yet been named though Santos knew who he wanted and it promised to be a tough fight in Congress to get him.

A nice tie in. Bartlett said the same thing to Leo at the end of the first episode (though that episode was set at least a year into Bartlett's first term).

They were also the first words Josh said to Bartlett after coming out of surgery when he was shot.

While I hated the politics of the show, I loved it none the less, I'll miss seeing it on, however, given the ratings of the past couple of years I think it was time to go. I guess I'll buy the DVD's and have to watch them a few times.
