Reminding you this is a small town newspaper, and was actually published in last Wednesday's issue, it's still amusing. Maybe I should suggest that they move all church services to Saturday so my Football games aren't interrupted on Sunday!

(Greene, Iowa)

We have been reflecting this past week on the recent garage sales held in Greene. The weather was certainly lovely, and it was good to see lots of activity going on. We have concern about them being held on Sunday. It affects attendance in church, and in one instance one of our ladies was having difficulties in her route to church because of extra cars being parked near her garage. Over the years, one of our strengths of our Greene Community has been the fact that we are a church community, with fine ecumenical church events drawing us together as one in Christ. This one event is flagrant in its interference with church attendance. When it comes time for the next garage sale event, it would be nice of the day of the week would be reconsidered. Sincerely, Carol and Darrell -------

Yeah, it's funny but the best word in my opinion is:

Pathetic.

What makes them Bible thumpers?

Judging by their rather polite letter, they just appear to be ordinary folk who are justifiably concerned about a parking situation affecting the ability of parisioners to attend Church.

They should move to Salt Lake City, where the streets are still built wide enough to U-turn your wagon and 4 yoke of oxen.

I know what church they were talking about, it's next to a car wash and there is ample parking. Also, the parking situation they were talking about, at least the way I understand it in the letter, was at this ladies house because of "extra cars being parked near her garage". If the cars were parked so she couldn't get out of her garage, yes that is an issue, however "near" doesn't sound like a big deal to me. And these people that attended the yard sales and not church last Sunday, it's not like they were forced to go to these yard sales instead of church.

Agreed. They are just asking their neighbors to reconsider the day they have their garage sale. "Flagrant in its interference" might have been a little bit strong language. The lady in question should have approached the folks having the sale and asked them to find the person blocking her way and get them to move the car. No more, no less.

They are just expressing their opinion to have Sunday as a day of rest in their fine town and for folks to be a little more considerate. If folks want to have garage sales on Sunday that is their choice and it is the other folks' choice not to attend. I wouldn't consider them bible thumpers by this letter alone.

Leave 5 minutes earlier.

Problem solved. We could have saved a lot of ink and time.

Very serious, it's these type of people who want their values respected, but have very little tolerance for others.

Yes, but does that equate them to the Taleban?

Did they commit public executions?
Did they make women second class citizens?
Did they do torture?
Carry out terrorist attacks?

Consider your comparison for just a second, and try justifying it once more.

Unlike Carol and Darrell, the Taliban don't write letters, and lack the words "nice," "lovely," and "reconsider" in their lexicon.

They'd just blow up the parked cars, then behead Darrell (taped on a handheld VCR, of course), and put Carol in a burkah.
