Same here, they do what they want and don't need "babysitters". As long as "what they want" includes some cuddling every now and then and not too much furniture-testing, the cat is great.

Ditto -- definitely my favourite animals. They are independent as you said, and they know perfectly well that a bit of cuddling and purring at the right time is all they need to do to be loved...
I also like big cats in general, such as lions and tigers. I find Siberian snow tigers especially fascinating:

But cats consider you kind of a moving furniture. Dogs are probably the most loyal friends, cats are "just there".
That one is fine since it don't live in Georgia. It has some cousin here in my neighborhood that is fixing to get shot if I get a chance next time it decides my house is a food source at 4 in the morning.
