Family members say former U.S. Sen. and Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen has died, The Associated Press reports.

Bentsen, also the Democratic 1988 vice presidential nominee, died at his home in Houston.

It was during that campaign that he told rival Dan Quayle in a debate, "You're no Jack Kennedy."

I liked Lloyd, he has always been an interesting character down here in Texas. One of the few politicians who not only was affable but at least appeared to have some semblance of character. Great guy and he will definitely be missed here in the Lone Star State.

Had a long career of service to the nation, but, in a society of sound bites, will probably be remembered for his quip to Dan Quayle, comparing him to JFK.

R.I.P.

And the look on Quayle's face was absolutely priceless.  Smile

I'm surprised someone didn't do one of those "Priceless" jokes online with that one.

Thought it was "I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine, and believe me Senator, [... pause/...] you're no Jack Kennedy.

Not to knitpick, however I remember that pause and everybody was wondering was he was about to say. A great moment.

To me he was a good, strongly pro-Business Democrat... the kind I can get along with!

RIP, and Thanks for all those years of service.

Keep waiting. It isn't there as of a couple of minutes ago.

For a zinger, yes. For sheer deer in the headlights you have to go with Adm. Stockdale's "Who am I? Why am I here?"

Pretty good politician and kept the Treasury intact.

And had Quayle been thinking, the best comeback ever would have been, "You're right - I only sleep with my wife."

And a comeback to that would be: "After looking at Marilyn, everyone is still trying to figure out why."  Big grin

Great line. Absolutely.

Best line ever? I'm not sure.

Ronnie's line about not making his opponent's youth and inexperience an issue when asked about the "age" issue during his debate was right up there.

Attacking Quayle is like beating up the retarded kick. Entertaining? Possibly to some. Satisfying - no way.

I think his line was "And I will not hold the inexperience and youth of my opponent against him." And Reagan was so engaging and always had that twinkle in his eye, that even Mondale had to laugh. But Walter wasn't mad, he obviously thought it was great.

I think that trumped Bensten's line, simply because it was delievered in a jovial manner.

(And I assume "kick" was to = "hick.")

Golly...then imagine what *running him for Vice President of the US* must have been like for the Reeps!

And then electing him. Weren't those the days!  Smile

just wondered, and checked up media in the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Switzerland and can say that it is a "no-news" here. Whenever I remember Bentsen as a nice man, I have to tell you that he was/is not well known outside the USA.
