Hey guys-
There is a possibility I will going to Spain in a few months. I'm not entirely sure exactly where, but it would be around the Malaga area. How is this place? Pretty fun? Good bar scene? Any info would be great.

My parents have a house in the area so I have been there frequently lately.
The nightlife in Malaga itself is pretty good (like almost everywhere in Spain), there are plenty of restaurants, bars and discos. But don't even think about going out before 11pm, everything will be still empty because the Spaniards love it to go out late.
Shoot me an eMail when you know the dates when you are there, maybe we can meet up.

My mom lives there, she owns a very nice bed&breakfast up the mountain
about 45mins drive from AGP. (www.lagabella.com).
Malaga is quite good, but if you want to go to a very stylish glamour place
you need to go to Puerto Banus in the Marbella area. Be sure to bring lot's
of money with you, but then again, there are a lot of pretty girls
to be spotted in Puerto Banus' night scene, yummie!!!
Tarifa is also a very cool place to go, it's the most Southern place of Spain,
and is generally known as the (kite)surfers Mekka of Europe, so lot's of
fun, interesting people to meet on the beach there!
As mentioned above, don't make too much plans before midnight, as you'll
end up in empty bars/clubs!
Should you wish to visit the Alhambra, then you'd be wise to book tickets well in advance: http://www.alhambra.org/eng/index.as...ecc=/alhambra/information/tickets. And I mean weeks in advance. July/August is the height of the tourist season, and Spain also has very many 'domestic' tourists. Even for the week after Easter, I couldn't get any tickets three weeks in advance. They cost €10,00 plus a modest service charge for the BBVA Bank. All major credit cards accepted.
If I think of anything else then I'll get back to you. And I'm sure Patrick has more suggestions. By the way, I've never seen a castillo blanco in Andalucía. However, you may strike lucky!
I´m sure you already have found out that summers are rather hot in Andalucia, though the temps on the beach are bareable. However, going inland at over 100F might be only little fun, if one is not accustomed to it (okay, your profile says "DFW" - point taken ).
Winter is low season down there, with temps on the beaches around 50-60F (sometimes 70F).
Depending on the exact location, the snowcovered mountains of the Sierra Nevada can be reached within 1-2 hours giving you the opportunity to go bathing and skiing within one day.
During winter monthly rents for apartments (aka. "condos") are at their lowest. Some tourists rent these for several months during winter at prices much lower than a hotel.
A big english-speaking community lives in Fuengirola, which can be reached by train and motorway from both AGP and downtown Malaga.

Malaga is a beautiful place and Puerto Banus is very chic. We used to have a villa just outside Puerto Banus and had many memorable holidays there. Great beaches nearby, great bars and a great night life that normally did not get started until midnight - most Spanish have their evening meal at 10. However, the cost of living constantly went up and it soon became costly to live life to the full (a joy of eating out was that it was often cheaper than eating at home). Apart from that, the real Spanish flavour seemed to evaporate as more and more non-Spanish moved in, so we sold up and now spend our holidays in Gran Canaria.
For the real Spanish flavour, as suggested above visit Granada and the Alhambra.

The whole Andalucia region is beautiful - you can't go wrong. Malaga is nice, and much better than one might imagine given its reputation amongst us brits as being no more than the gateway to the Costa del Fish'n'Chips.
If you want to spend time in southern Spain, though, I completely recommend Granada. I spent 5 months there studying Spanish and it is such a beautiful, youthful city - I had the time of my life. The only detractor is the distance from the beach, but its only around 45 minutes to the Costa Tropical.

My parents have a house in Marbella as well and we used to go every summer. We haven't been in a couple of years but I am going mid June. Basically Marbella is like the "monaco" of Costa del sol. It's about 45 minutes away from Malaga. There are other towns that are worth visiting such as Mijas, Fungheirola (sp?), Tormolinos, Gibraltar of course, Ronda...Ronda and Mijas are in the mountains but they're both worth visiting. The nightlife is great - its a playground for rich Arabs/Europeans ... enjoy!

If you feel really adventurous, you can take a ferry to North Africa. I was reading about the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla which are actually in North Africa. They seem interesting. You can also take a ferry to Tangier, Morocco, but I am told that Tangier is to Morocco as Tijuana is to Mexico. Southern Spain does sound like a nice trip. I would like to go someday.

Try Costa del Sol train, and visit those wonderful villages. Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola... I'll never forget.
I had no idea about Malaga till I arrived there exactly 1 year ago, and I love ot since the very arrival!
