Ever been to Darwin, Australia? that has been the only crapshoot in our planning, most tours are full booked!

We have 4 full days to plan in DRW. (6 days if you count flying days..but they really dont count as we arrive late and depart early.)

And right now, the toss up is whether to do a 1day Litchfield trip, 2 day Kakadu trip and 1 full day in Darwin ...

OR..... do.... we ....just....

screw Darwin and do 3 days Kakadu+HawkDreaming/jimjimfalls and 1 day Litchfield. this would give us only an evening in Darwin, from 6 PM onward after the Litchfield day trip.

So ya been to Darwin??? worth a full day In DRW or a half day?

A full day in Darwin, particularly after doing a tour (hopefully not one of those packaged ones, but one you will do yourself) is a must. Not only because the relaxation would be good, but because Darwin really is a unique city to experience.

Just a shame that you will be getting into Darwin at 6pm, as you will likely miss one of the true experiences you won't get in Sydney, Melbourne or elsewhere on the east coast - that being the tropical Darwin sunset over the Timor Sea.

If I were you, and you had the $, I would personally ditch the Litchfield trip, and instead try to get to the Cobourg Peninsula - this is Aboriginal territorial land (Arnhem Land) and access is limited (you need to apply for permits before entering). Many years ago we spent 3 nights at Seven Spirit Bay - the prices aren't for the faint hearted. If you like fishing, this is one of the great spots on the planet.

Okay
Do the litchfield trip over 2 days forget Kakadu its a rip off , spend a night in Mandorra( 30 mins by ferrry from cullen bay ) and meet a real territorian and a few mad backpackers and spend the last day in Darwin go to the museam , aviation museam on the Stuart highway 20 mins from town ,parliment house, botanical gardens , walk along foreshore of darwin harbour some great history around there , grab the tour bus and get a day pass. Cullen bay to see the sun set (Awsome). finish the night off at Shennangins best pub in town , take taxi direct from pub to airport .
Darwin is a great town but watch out for Longrassers who humbug( ask for money smokes & drink ) say no ALL the time

thank god i was not born a bird. this type of flying is much better

WOW, such variablility in opinions. Litchfield calls to me more than Kakadu but Arhmen sounds very interesting.

and try 2 days in Litchfield and perhaps a night in Mandorra.

We have to do a tour only b/c I wont drive in Oz. Last time I did, well, let's say many Australians are aware of me  Smile

Besides Arnhme land, is Hawk Dreaming worthwhile?

in fact, would a 3 day Kakadu with Hawk Dreaming tour be better than say 1 day litchfield and 2 day Kakadu?

(all 2 days litchfield tours are booked)

Apparently 20degrees C at 6am is a cold morning.

We might actually do that as well. We decided to spend a day in DRW anyway jsut to relax.

Cullen bay to see the sun set (Awsome). Is Cullen bay near those Mindle beach markets?

I did the 3-day Kakadu trip and I have to say it was fantastic. The walks are amazing you can swim in tropical plunge pools. Ubirr Rock is fantastic as well. Great sight over the tropical forest. I can only recommend that trip.

I did the one-day Litchfield tour, too. One day is definitely enough considering Litchfield seemed to be a lot smaller than Kakadu and furthermore it is closer to DRW. I would also recommend to do a boat tour on the alligator river. You can see spectacular crocodile jumps there.
