A.net Meet At 78° North (Svalbard, NO) In August

Ok, this is really crazy. For some reason I woke up this morning with an unexplainable urge to visit Svalbard (Spitsbergen), and now I'm almost ready to book. I did some online research and it seems that it is a very interesting but extreme place. For close to 100% of A.netters this would be the northernmost place they've ever been. (Not counting polar flights!)

So anyway. There is not a single shot at LYR in the A.net database, even though this airport sees at least 3 scheduled flights a day (2x SAS, 1x West Air Sweden). So I thought, why not go there with 2 or 3 A.netters, check out the place for a coupe of days, shoot our pictures, and enjoy the polar day (nope, sun doesn't ever go down at all).

Anybody in? This is NOT a joke, I'm dead serious. Fares are as low as 279 Eur round trip out of OSL, and getting there should be no problem either. For example, I just found 140 Eur round trip from FRA using KLM City Hopper.

Dates: August 6 (Sun) - August 10 (Thu)

We'd all book together to avoid the price going up after 2 bookings.

I'm really serious about this. I do think we could assemble a group of 4 or 5.

Here are some web sites:

University of Svalbard: http://www.unis.no/
City of Longyearbyen: http://www.longyearbyen.net/
Svalbard Tourist Info: http://www.svalbard.com/

Greetings!

Just the other morning I was looking at my world map in my room and noticed an Island called Spitsbergen, looked it up and it does look a great place, I'd love to visit Greenland also, that would be fantastic!

Now, that sounds like a REAL adventure Soren! LOL!! I wish I could go, it would be good. But, unless Mr Lotto decides I'm his long lost son, then I'll have to miss out on this one.

Be interesting to see if BMIFlyer turns up - he seems to go everywhere else! Big grin

Wow, I wouldn't have thought that I'd actually find some people crazy enough to consider coming! Just take your time making up your mind, no hurry here. Maybe some of your non A.net friends want to come along? This one is even safe for girlfriends/wives, as the nature/adventure part should outweigh the plane/spotting part  Smile

Well, as you see OSL is quite accessible and not too expensive. As long as we book the Arctic segment as a group, we should be able to get a good deal too. (You know how sometimes the price goes up after 2 or 3 people buy seperately)

For all who are still in doubt about this: Just do it! When was the last time you've done something really really crazy? You're not really going bankrupt here, that fare is actually a pretty sweet deal at the moment. Heck, Patrick spends more  dollarsign  buying grass during these 4 days than we pay for the flights!

Let's leave Iceland far far south!  cold

Well they have some "Guest Houses" there which must be like hostels, and I'm sure they are a good deal. We could sleep in tents too, in case the weather is ok. There is a campground in town, here is the web site:
http://www.longyearbyen-camping.com/index_start.php?lang=en

A night on the campground is 80 NOK (US$13 or 10EUR or 7 GBP), that should be ok for us!

Hi Soren,

great and crazy idea. I just starred this topic and keep reading it. I like such crazy ideas and I think it would be worth spending the money. The mentioned dates (Aug. 6 - Aug. 10) are still fine with me so if a group is forming there is a good chance that I am part of it. And maybe we could even fly together from ZRH to OSL?
