Hello everybody

This week end I was in Washington D C. While driving though down town D C, I end up behind a current model Viper SRT-10, then I put up be side it so I could make a right hand trun. When it pull of, it's engines made a sound a like a Porches 911 engine would make, this not the first time I herd this come from a Viper engine. Should a 8.3L V-10 have a more robust sound.

I can't speak for the road car, but I've seen plenty of Viper GTS-Rs at sportscar racing events, and the big V10 has a very unique, distinctive sound... nothing like a 911. Check out this sound clip of a racing viper-

I've heard what you mean, 747. It's probably just due to tuning of the exhaust system...

They probably had a set of ricer fart cannons mounted to the back. Big grin

Porsche engines have a high pitched turbine sound to them, even at low speeds.

That is what it sounded like, but I've head it both on the street and at the dealership!

Nice. Wouldn't mind one of those if i was stinking rich, they've got a very perculiar but attractive oversized engine look. Sounds like i'd have to buy a KC-10 to follow it around though.

The V10 configuration has a very unique sound to it (an inline-5 has a similar sound). If you hear one, it sounds like a really low-revving Formula 1 car, which used V10's (until this year). If you ever watch sports car racing and hear the Judd GV4 (4.0L) and GV5 (5.0L) in a prototype it's about halfway between the Viper and F1 car. Yes I know, I'm  stretch

For whatever reason, the V10 has a certain pitch to it, just like a V6, V8, or V12.

I was told it was because the angle of the pistons...If a normal car's pistons are sitting at a 45* angle the Viper's is at 90* (or reversed). I may be wrong but thats what I was told by some reliable car guys I know.

I don't read much into Vipers

Be hard to do when the exhaust comes out the side  Wink

The original Viper RT10 had exhaust out of each side of the car, like the current car, but the pipes didn't cross over, so essentially each exhaust exit would only have 5 cylinders emptying into it, and it created a really terrible sound from the side of the car, but now they have crossover pipes that dump all 10 cylinders into each exit pipe, so it sounds like it should.

The "natural" V angle for a V10 is 72º (or multiples thereof), although it doesn't have to be that. The Viper's is actually 90º because the first Viper engine was literally a V8 with two extra cylinders tacked onto it, and almost every V8 is 90º ("natural" angle).
