Update From Iraq With Pictures

So I suppose I'll update you all on the latest & greatest here in Iraq.  Yeah sure

Since my last update I've been separated from my home unit and attached to a National Guard unit that just rotated in country. They deployed back in OIF 1, but never worked outside the Kuwaiti AO. So needless to say, they're all ate up and have a lot to learn about working over Baghdad. Truthfully, this whole situation pisses me off. Being a WO1 (my rank) can really suck at times. I'm above all the enlisted ranks, but at the bottom of the commissioned ranks. In a lot of ways, it's like being a "Private" in the officer world. I get pushed around and get the short end of the stick often. I know it's part of the process and something everyone goes through, but is sucks nonetheless. Thankfully I'm getting promoted to CW2 in the near future and I can escape some of the bullshit that comes with being the pee-on.

Since the last time I went on that ride through Baghdad... I was able to score another ride on a convoy. It was one of those "I need to face down my fear and doubt" deals. But we saw no action, so it really didn't serve its intended purpose.

Speaking of that day... I want to thank all of you who expressed your concern and best wishes for me. Being able to talk it out and write down my experienced really helped. So thanks for listening.

There is a lot of cool "nose art" on a lot of our military equipment. Here are a few ones I like (not my photo)

A few marines and army grunts playing soccer with the local children. They are pretty good... but they don't play fair. Christ, no one in this damn country plays fair, why would it be any different when playing soccer?

No way! Iraq had F-4s?

EOD exploding yet another IED or cache of weapons:

Fuckin' haji has been trying to use "psychological warfare" against us. I wonder if our own psych warfare sounds so funny? Two things stand out to me on this: First, isn't it ironic that there are a lot of people here on A.Net who cannot reference President Bush with the proper respect for the office, but the TERRORIST refer to him as "MR" Bush!!??? Second, I love the line about how serving Iraq financially supports my widow and her new boyfriend.

Having been involved in an IED attack... this stuff hits closer to home. And I can't help but wonder if destroying all of these mines even put a dent in Haji's ability to attack us.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/17.jpg

Here is the control tower at BIAP (Baghdad International Airport). There are still some buildings that are riddled with bullet holes and war scars from the first battle Americans fought in Baghdad during the initial invasion.

Last Monday was Memorial Day. However, here in Iraq, every day we lose a soldier... is a memorial day. It's hard, there is a lot of pain and death over here, and you see it day-in, day-out . If you're not careful, you'll get swept up in the madness.

Yet another day in Iraq: death, destruction and pain.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g52/UH60PilotIraq/Iraq/128.jpg

Lastly: Me in my flight uniform, vest, helmet and face mask - sexy huh? Sorry I had to black out my name. The last thing I want is CID to show up and start getting on my case for OPSEC violations.

Picture is worth a thousand words. That one says a lot. Sinisterly beautiful, I'd call it.

I saw something like that in a history textbook, it was in Africa. I think it's some sort of religious thing, but I can't say more than that. It's quite interesting though.

Great pictures. Stay safe, and keep checking in every so often. It's good to hear reports from someone in the middle of things.

Great pics. Thanks for keeping us posted.

That's probably an Iranian F-4 that crashed or ditched during the Iran-Iraq War. The IRGCAF had, and still has, a bunch of Phantoms

That's a MiG-23

The AAA piece is an 85mm M-44 or KS-12. Nasty bit of hardware there.

Keep safe, and lay off the convoys.

Great pictures UH60 . . . glad you're still kicking up dust.

Good stuff UH.

Yeah, WO1 does bite. Fortunately it is temporary. Are they rotating in any new Warrants so that you will at least be senior to somebody when you get promoted? Be kind of disappointing if everyone you knew made CW2 at the same time. "Ranking Warrant Officer" is a title rather like "most virtuous whore" but at least you won't feel like you have to correct anyone when they call you 'chief.'

I'm struck by some of your pictures. The throne room for example with the paintings of - dare I say it? weapons of mass destruction. Saddam sure as hell played into this situation didn't he?

The UH-60 panel photo: That looks like an awful lot of annunciator lights for a simple two-engine helicopter. I think that would concern me; clearly someone connected with it expects trouble!

"Kiowas going out on a scouting mission..." How some things don't change. I suppose the mission gear installed has changed but that whole concept is a blast from the past.

"Crashing Sucks!" Damn! That is eloquent.

In general; wow, I thought I lived in a desert. There are mine dumps and alkali flats here in Nevada that are greener than Iraq. The nuclear test facilities are greener! Fertile crescent my ass.

Be safe pard.
