The beginning of the World Cup is just hours away so I decided to create this thread for a place to talk about the World Cup. My prediction for who is going to win, Brazil. Who I want to win, the underdog, Iran...well in all seriousness go USA!!! Any predictions or insight?

The popular choice is Brazil, most fans from outside of Brazil would point to them as winners. I'd love to see England go all the way, and if they play to their ability they can. But we would have to beat Brazil somewhere along the way, and i can't see that happenening. Ronaldo, Adriano, Kaka, Ronaldinho....four match winners just there! Argentina, France, Holland and Germany are potential winners too, just depends on how they perform on the day. It's dificult to make accurate predictions before the tournament, but everything will be inveiled in the next four weeks. I can't wait!

Those Brazillian names certainly are match winners, but then so are Beckham (back on form and fit, with inch perfect passes and killer through balls), Gerrard (as long as Carrick play the holding role and Sven allows Gerrard to roam), Cole and Carragher (tightest defenders in the world, imo), Lampard (has positively owned the midfield of almost every match he played this season). We're lacking up front, but I really believe that if Gerrard, Beckham, Lampard et al can deliver like we know they can, then Courch, Owen, hopefully Rooney, and - heck - even Defoe should be able to convert. And I'd love to see Walcott play a blinder too.
This is definitely the strongest England team we've had since probably the 1986 squad. Plus the 10 year rule applies - 1986, missed out to the unfair Hand of God. 1996 (Euro), missed out to an offside German goal and then a missed Southgate pen. 2006 - third time lucky COME ON ENGLAND!!!!

There is now a controversy regarding the injury Michael Ballack has. He will not start in the inaugural match after all and is now being accused of underestimating his injury and for having behaved unprofessionally on the matter.
If these accusations are true, then this truely shows what a person and how overrated Ballack is. Personally I wouldn't even have nominated him, especially with his recent slacking off and this deal he got from Chelsea, which will be an incentive for him to continue slacking off.
We're less than 24 hours away from the World Cup inaugural match between Germany and Costa Rica (which Germany will lose 0:2 ).

Who is the best , who is the best underdog, in other words while I am at a pub ... fill in this sentance for me .... I sure like ________ but the way ________ has been playing , they may be good enought to beat ________.
Then if they ask me more questions , what should I do other than offer to buy them a beer or run.

I sure like Poland but the way Togo has been playing, they may be good enough to beat England or France

I'm so glad somebody has started the 'Official' World Cup thread. There are so many others that I guess must be unofficial. The World Cup is such a big event with so many different subjects to talk about I can't see this thread lasting the duration.
It's kinda like me starting 'The Official News Thread - post here your thoughts on any news stories that come up'.

Quoting IFEMaster (Reply 2): Second favourites to win behind Brazil, and we all know how Brazil can have their off days (France 3 - 0 Brazil, anyone?).
Ahh..the mystery of St. Denis. Who knows what happened, but the team that entered the Stade de France that day was not the same one that beat the Netherlands in Marseille only a few days before. Enough trips down Memory Lane...
The entire world always picks Brazil to win it all yet Brazilians rarely think they are the ones who will win it all. Brazilians expect nothing less than a title and there will be hell to pay if there's no title. The buzz in Brazil is that this team is as good as the 82 team with Zico, Socrates, et al because a lot of these players have been playing at the international level for quite a while (for instance, Cafu and Roberto Carlos have been with the selecao for 8 years running) so they have great chemistry.
Now that Rooney is gone, England's chances are gone. Maybe a trip to the quarterfinals. I watched that Jamaica friendly and I was impressed with how graceful and agile Peter Crouch is for a man of his stature.
I hear a lot of great things about the Netherlands but I was unimpressed with their performance against Mexico last week. Both sides seemed very uninspired.
I hope to see Switzerland do well, if only for themselves. I am a little biased because one of my best friends is Swiss so I have closely followed with him how far Swiss footy has come since I met him and started following them in 2001.

I'm not particularly interested in the World Cup, however since some of you folks are, I thought I'd mention that last Tuesday's USA TODAY newspaper, page 6C on 06/06/06 (how's that for 6-6-6-6 ?) has a nice, I think, color graphic of all the 32 teams' home jerseys.
Just thought I'd mention this in case someone (ah-hemm) forgets who's who.
all best; jack
