Bundesliga Gets New Name: "T-Com Liga"

The German pro football league "Bundesliga" will probably get renamed after 43 years, the new name will be "T-Com Liga" or "T-Com Bundesliga" because Deutsche Telekom is becoming the new main sponsor.

Source: www.tagesschau.de

Pretty lame if you ask me, the football sponsoring is getting out of hand, renaming the complete league is way over the top.

What do you think?

I think it is rubbish.

Just look at the Austrian league with all the silly team names. FC Milch XX, FC cigarette brand XX etc. You cannot take them serious...

How long until we see FC Franziskaner München, FC red light club Hamburg?  Wink

In Switzerland, the league is called Axpo Super League, named after an electricity producer  Sad

WHAT?!  Wow!

I hope they don't! IMO it would be a huge mistake if they do so, the name "Bundesliga" is known worldwide.

Seems like they will be doing something that happened in Switzerland, the Swiss league was renamed from Naitonalliga A to Super League (the league is far away from being "Super").

Where's the problem here...you don't actually believe ONE fan will ever call Bundesliga T-Com League...it will remain Bundesliga, period!

And the sheer fact, that they will have to pay dearly for that privilege is not bad at all, German clubs urgently need income to increase competitiveness. I mean look at Italy, Juve, that cheating, lying, frigging bloody bunch of morons, gets over ONE HUNDRED FRIGGING Million Euros p.a. only from TV rights!!! SEE HOW YOU LIKE IT IN SECOND DIVISION, YOU CHEATING, LYING.....etc. (see above).

Even those funny names of the arenas...I mean hey, who cares, does anyone (except Schalke fans of course) ever call Westfalenstadion Signal-Iduna-Park??? That sounds like a home for war veterans on old-age pension!!

I know it's only VfB but I like it!

Same in Hamburg. While most people have gotten used to calling the AOL-Arena by its name, many still refer to it as Volksparkstadion.

It heard that T-Com pays 30 million euros per season for the Name. Good money, but the Bundesliga will always be the Bundesliga. Eventhough people got used to saying AOL-Arena instead of the Volksparkstadion. (Yes I'm a HSV fan for Life)
In Austria the Leaguename is also sold or not?

It is strange enough already that during Bayern Mnchen games in one of the corners the fans are always dressed in a way that as a whole it looks like the T-Com logo.  vomit

You are right, fans will continue to call it Bundesliga but imagine the promotional flood before every game on TV, it will be like: "Good evening Ladies and Gentelman, Bitburger, Mc Donald's and Coca Cola are presenting the top game of the T-Com League live from the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund".

Football is becoming a permanent commercial spot with a bit football in between.  Angry

Well, if it makes you feel better, there other clubs that did that as well  Wink . E.g. I'm still not fully sure that Milan is innocent, especially with Berlusconi behind them, but anyway, that's getting off-topic.

On the topic again:
I'm still waiting for the day that footballer jerseys look like racedriver jackets with 100 different company logos on them.

We have had a named "Super League" for the past couple of years now (Faxe Kondi-league, SAS-league etc.), but most people still refer to it as the "Super League". It's €30 mill. pr. season for something that very few people will even bother to notice, so why even bother get upset about it.

At the risk of repeating myself (http://www.airliners.net/discussions/non_aviation/read.main/1247815/):

You seem to forget that there are three contractual partners, not only two, with the population or residents being the third. However the Volk wasn't asked when they lost their Volkspark Stadium, and if the new name AOL Arena isn't mentioned often enough, HSV won't get the full pay check.

Correct, but as I said in the other thread, the "Volk" cannot be part of the deal, that's what Managements are for, and the sheer fact, that guys like van der Vaart are paid by thsi, makes such a deal rather acceptable for the masses!

And since the "volk" is not part of the deal, THEY do not have to call it AOL arena...but can keep on calling it Volkspark, quite simple, some to think of it  Wink

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the minor leagues in the US does it in a few years.

The corporate naming of teams is beginning to hit the US as well. Red Bull purchased the NY/NJ Metrostars of the MLS and renamed them Red Bull New York. I expect this trend to hit the minor leagues and minor sports (Arena Football, Pro Lacrosse, Indoor Soccer) within the next few years. It's really a matter of time before one of the pro sports leagues names their championship trophy after a corporate sponsor (Like in the old WHA, whose teams competed for the AVCO Cup.).

The corporate naming of venues is getting out of hand. The new stadiums for the Yankees and Mets have only recently been announced, and they're already saying that these stadiums will get corporate names. Heck, there are college stadiums with corporate names (Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium @ Troy State University is one), I not including venues where pro and college teams share the facility (like the RBC Center in Raleigh). You have some venues where the coporate naming doesn't sound like a corporately named venue (Philips Arena and the Staples Center are two such examples).

Look at auto racing, that's one big corporate naming after another.

Yeah, this corporate sponsorship BS is, well, BS. Here in CLE Gund Arena got renamed Quicken Loans Arena (The "Q") how effing tacky. Auto racing is just as bad, the Home Depot-Lowes-Ameritrade-Ford-Fedex-500 sponsored by Coke, UPS, and FOX Sports. Atleast in the US they haven't started to put logos on the uniforms yet, just everything else.
