Question For Johan: Rating Posts

How many "votes" must a post get, for a rating to be visible publically? I have seen star ratings for posts with as few as 8 views, but some posts with 40+ replies and 1200+ views have no visible star rating.

I'm just curious.

Also, will you implement the ratings of REPLIES to a post as well anytime soon (I realize you are busy right now with server issues), but there are many threads where some replies are worthless, and some are excellent, and they need to be separately rated.

I saw a two star rating for this post, with 17 views. Strangely, other posts of mine with > 1000 views do not have visible ratings.

Because people have to rate them first..

I believe it is between 3 to 5 votes before they get a star rating.

Dan

But it's strange that a post with 1000 views could not get even 3-5 ratings?

RY2,
People can rate topics differently, it isn't rated on how many views it gets. The worse the topic, the more votes it gets, for the worse. Those votes make it the 1-2 stars...

I understand that, 174thfwff.

My question is HOW MANY TIMES must a post be rated before the STARS are visible in the main forum screen?

sorry, I would immagine a few just to let them average out. My guess would be 7 or 8

So... will Johan give us an "official" answer?

Then again, he seems to keep us in the dark about many things.

My guess is that it isn't a constant, but the algorithm uses the standard deviation of the ratings -- as I've noticed some topics which would probably be rated very high or low by almost everybody get their ratings displayed quickly relative to the number of views, while "controversial" topics, where people might rate it high OR low don't show stars until a much higher number of views.

Hmmm... am I right?

The topic "TWA To Cease Operations On December 1" on the Civil Aviation forum, as of right now, has a visible rating of 5 stars, but yet only 4 (FOUR) page views... interesting. I guess this sets a new least upper bound for the minimum number of ratings needed for stars to be visible in a post.

Still interested in the official word from Johan...  Smile

Another thing, if Johan isn't ignoring this post, often times when I rate a post, it will say I have already rated it when I haven't!

Is it a stale cookie or something? This bug should be investigated.

OK, check this out guys. How can one post have just 3 views and have a VISIBLE stars rating, and for many other posts with HUNDREDS of views, there are no stars visible?

C'mon Johan, won't you enlighten us as to this mystery or paradox.

And yes, I know that I have absolutely no life in asking this question  Smile

What do you guys think is more likely to happen:

1. Southwest buys A380s and uses them to start a JFK-LHR run.

2. Johan actually manages to reply to posts or emails that just ask very simple questions like this one.

Yeah...
KM buys A380s, builds an airport in Gozo and flies MLA-GZM on A380s rather than Mi-8s as Malta Aircharter...

Another suggestion: we should be able to CHANGE our ratings of posts by re-voting, with only the most recent vote counting. Many threads start out great, and degenerate into garbage (for example, the recent post here about the UA 93 article in Newsweek).

Conversely, some threads start out bad, but get better once people start asking interesting questions.

I don't know, do you really think the "rating" field is a good idea? It's something we're tried now for a few months but it seems most posts go unrated. And even if a post got five starts, that doesn't say much about it as there's so few of you actually voting.

I suggest we remove the "rate" field and add a "last reply by" field instead containing the username of the user who replied last. Or do you have other ideas? Don't hesitate to let me know, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks,
Johan

Hrmmm...I hardly ever look at the rating field personally, because I know people will judge low because of personal grudges, or vice versa.

Not a bad idea.

I'm with Johan's suggestion to ditch the rating field and just display the last replied by username; that's what most other forums on the Web do.

BTW, Johan, you still need to answer my original question in this thread!!!!!  Big grin

25 QantasAirways : I agree. Last replied... ditch the rating system. Since it came, I think I have only voted once. Regards QANTASairways
26 Ryu2 : People seem to rate topics based solely on whether they agree with the poster's opinions or not, NOT the quality of the topic itself.
27 Post contains images Ryu2 : Hey Johan -- if we do end up paying for this site, will you actually start to reply to simple questions like the one I ask in this thread?! I have not
28 BH346 : I agree with ditching the ratings
