I could see that being a successful marketing technique for certain products that often command repeat sales by word of mouth. Things like CDs for unsigned bands or independent movies might work well. It's just an incrediblty expensive way of doing things!

The BBC report mentioned that if corporations start doing this kind of thing, it could only eventually turn out to be "uncool", as with most things. In any event, it seems rather impossible for a corporation to deliberately stock things that it didn't mean to stock.
