Kind of a odd subject, but one that has me thinking kinda hard lately.

War, terrorism, murder, famine, tsunamis, hurricanes, ozone layer, mad cow, bird flu, AIDS, oil, traffic, paychecks getting smaller while the costs go up, women getting crazier, PMS, Bush, Anna Nicole Smith, and the list goes on!

Where do you see our world in 20-50 years? I really see a dim outlook, as things just seem to be getting pretty bad. Is it me, or is our population getting out of control? Is there anyone else that just shakes their heads in disbelief when they watch the news anymore?

I heard that we have at least 10 years before the point of no return with the ozone layer. Is this a sobering fact, or is it a scare tactic? I don't know about you, but that kinda scares the crap out of me when leading scientists say this.

Think about this for a second:

Are you going to sit here and bitch and moan about it, or are you going to do something about it that doesn't include bitching and moaning?

I was expecting a comment like this actually.

Sure, let me take care of all the problems. Easy fix. I assume everyone will contribute to fixing it too.

BTW- I would not say I was bitching and moaning. I think I had a relevant question/questions.

I think there wll be a bright light for a few nano seconds, your skin will start to get warm, then within a few more nano seconds later you'll be microwaved like a Sausage Mc Muffin with cheese. No problem Big grin

I was expecting a response like this as well. No, I don't expect any one person to be the be-all and end-all of the worlds problems, but it's gotta start somewhere, and an internet discussion forum doesn't cut it.

Alright. Can you answer my question about the ozone layer? What happens if nothing changes after 10 years, and we go past the point of no return?

And an internet discussion forum is exactly what it is. A discussion forum. If you really have a problem with my question, perhaps it would be something to not respond to. Sorry if I offended you with a question.

Nice! Nothing like a nano second! LOL!

Seriously though, how long would it take if the ozone just went to crap? How long would we have? You know, is survival impossible?

Hey, if we survived the past, we'll survive the future. The 10's had WW1, 20's had Black Friday, the 30's the Great Depression, the 40's WW2, the 50's chrome car fins, the 60's assassinations, Vietnam, and the Cold War, etc. etc. etc. Sheesh, it's a wonder we're alive.

At least kids these days don't have to do run, duck and cover drills in schools.

You'll have to excuse DL. He gets testy after an evening with the Somalian hookers. Something about realizing he has to go home to start the triple cocktail eventually.

But we tried to fight it

Well, obviously I'm not talking about the ozone. I think we have bigger threats the the Ozone layer, namely ourselves. I'm sure without ozone though everything will evaporate including us.

Part of Ozone gas's absorbsion spectrum happens to include the UV spectrum (or most of it). Without that barrier, the earth's surface would be flooded by UV radiation, which as we know causes skin cancer. And that's exactly what would happen.

If you were to instantly or very quickly remove that barrier, the entire human population would die of skin cancer, whether infection to death would last a few days or a month isn't certain, it would take at least a day but probably not longer than a month (maybe if we dont go outside/stand near a window?), and the entire time it would be the most excruciating pain you could ever experience.

We could, to combat the effects, move not to outer space, but to deep underwater, but that by itself presents its own challenges (i.e. money), because water scatters all light.
