I got a week long pass! Late Monday, three of us hopped a ride on at C130 headed for Qatar. We'll be here for 5 glorious days in the sun.
Some of you might remember me talking about how my 2wks leave to Germany (where I was going to meet up with my wife) had been cancelled. Well my commander was able to give me the next best thing: a 5day pass to Qatar! And this city is really cool! It's a modern city that has everything I would expect from a western city (well minus beautiful women walking around in cute skirts). Yesterday, the 4th, we spent having a BBQ and drinking.... BEER!!!! I don't think they sell it in the city, but the air force guys hooked us up with a few 30 packs. AH.... so refreshing. Today we're going to lounge out on the beach. Tomorrow we're going to make our way to some mall that is suppose to be incredible. I guess the mall even has a hockey ice rink!?
The best part of the entire trip? I bought a cell phone as soon as I got here. I spent 4.5hrs tonight (it's early morning now) sitting out by the pool... talking to my wife. We talked about everything and nothing. It was so nice not to try and and fit everything you wanted to say in the usual 20min phone call. I've talked to my brothers/sisters/parents/grandparents and a few buddies back home.
It's funny it's the little things I have missed the most. Like not wearing a uniform 24/7 and getting into some civilian clothes. Or sleeping in a bed bigger than a bunk. Or having fresh sheets on that bed. And seeing GREEN grass!!!And of course, sitting with my feet in the pool, sipping a cold beer, while talking to the woman.
Life is good.
Going to Qatar:
4th of July BBQ:
Sun setting to the west (and what is westward?? HOME)
Ah, Chili's in Doha. Many a happy evening spent there. Allegedly the largest Chili's in the World? As claimed by one of the staff there.
There's plenty of decent food places at the top of the City Centre mall, including local & regional places doing really good shwarmas and hommus. There's also a Nandos which does an excellent chicken kebab.
Really cool thing is to take a picnic out in the desert and go to the inland sea. Best to go with someone who knows the way! Mind you, it will be getting a bit warm out there now.
Have fun in Qatar.

What is Qatar like? From the bit I've read about it, it seems like one of the more "Westernized" nations in the Middle East, along with the United Arab Emirates, Dubai in particular. From the pictures, it seems relatively well-developed.

A well deserved couple of days off. Looks like you guys had a great time knocking back some good ole' cold beer. Thanks for the many sacrifices you guys make to defend our great nation. God Bless and stay safe.
