YAYAYAYAYAYAY!

I got a week long pass! Late Monday, three of us hopped a ride on at C130 headed for Qatar. We'll be here for 5 glorious days in the sun.

Some of you might remember me talking about how my 2wks leave to Germany (where I was going to meet up with my wife) had been cancelled. Well my commander was able to give me the next best thing: a 5day pass to Qatar! And this city is really cool! It's a modern city that has everything I would expect from a western city (well minus beautiful women walking around in cute skirts). Yesterday, the 4th, we spent having a BBQ and drinking.... BEER!!!! I don't think they sell it in the city, but the air force guys hooked us up with a few 30 packs. AH.... so refreshing. Today we're going to lounge out on the beach. Tomorrow we're going to make our way to some mall that is suppose to be incredible. I guess the mall even has a hockey ice rink!?

The best part of the entire trip? I bought a cell phone as soon as I got here. I spent 4.5hrs tonight (it's early morning now) sitting out by the pool... talking to my wife. We talked about everything and nothing. It was so nice not to try and and fit everything you wanted to say in the usual 20min phone call. I've talked to my brothers/sisters/parents/grandparents and a few buddies back home.

It's funny it's the little things I have missed the most. Like not wearing a uniform 24/7 and getting into some civilian clothes. Or sleeping in a bed bigger than a bunk. Or having fresh sheets on that bed. And seeing GREEN grass!!!And of course, sitting with my feet in the pool, sipping a cold beer, while talking to the woman.

Life is good.

Can't say it compares to the Walmart Trip Report, but it's nice to see the pics.

Happy 4th!

Hey there,

Enjoy your trip away! Doha is a good place to go!

Every time I've been out there I've always met army folks out at the InterCon pool having their beers in the pool bar. Good bunch of people and always open to having a chat.

And you're right, there is an ice rink in the 'City Centre' mall. I believe they have competitive matches on Thursdays but you can show up and skate yourself too.

Enjoy your time off!!  Wink

Today we out on the ocean. Drank plenty of beer and swam a lot. There were a bunch of European chicks lounging on a boat near by... ahh... eye candy! Big grin

So is that Maccy D's or Rydges (I believe that is Rydges hotel behind right? They have a great bar at the top!)

Ah, Chili's in Doha. Many a happy evening spent there. Allegedly the largest Chili's in the World? As claimed by one of the staff there.

There's plenty of decent food places at the top of the City Centre mall, including local & regional places doing really good shwarmas and hommus. There's also a Nandos which does an excellent chicken kebab.

Really cool thing is to take a picnic out in the desert and go to the inland sea. Best to go with someone who knows the way! Mind you, it will be getting a bit warm out there now.

Have fun in Qatar. yes

Enjoy your time off. You've earned some. Do something stupid enough for us to laugh at but not stupid enough to get pinched bad enough to lose the flight rating.

What is Qatar like? From the bit I've read about it, it seems like one of the more "Westernized" nations in the Middle East, along with the United Arab Emirates, Dubai in particular. From the pictures, it seems relatively well-developed.

I usually have lunch in that Hardees, just up the road from my office.

Next time you are there try the 1st floor bar in the Ramada and 11th floor bar "Aussie Legends" in Ridges hotel.

Doha is not quite as "westernised" as Dubai but slowly opening up .........

I love that place! I usually have to have a few in the Italian place at the bottom before I can bare to get in that lift mind you.

I also love the Paloma in the InterCon.

I know what you mean about the lifts, I always have to face the door otherwise I crawl out once it gets to the top.

The Paloma is a great spot but gets very busy on a Thursday night, mind you EVERYWHERE gets too busy.

A bit of bad news flying around - I heard that the Ridges Hotel is to be pulled down !!!!

wait for it ......

The Emir wants it down as it spoils his view when he looks out of the windows in the palace  rotfl   rotfl

I heard that too! Ridiculous really!

The Paloma does get busy, but I do like it there. The Paloma and Ridges sports bar are my favourite 2 places to go out in Doha.

I also love the 'Italian job' restaurant in the Ramada hotel.

Hey UH60FtRucker, hope you have enjoyed your time away as I guess it must be near the end now.

Take care, and stay safe!!
