Yankees TV Announcers-- Impressed!

My buddy subsribes to an MLB game package on our local cable TV provider. Often the games are picked up from the local Fox Sports affiliate, but occasionally from other networks like NESN for the Red Sox. Last night we were watching a Yankees game on the Yankees network, YES. Now, I am no Yankee fan, but I must admit this was one of the higher-quality games I've seen in terms of announcers and graphics. The announcers (question-- who are they?) were knowledgeble and articulate. I learned a lot of things from them in the space of a few hours. I am used to watching the Giants, and while I love Jon Miller, Duane Kuiper, and Mike Krukow, sometimes they go a little too heavy on the humor, without enough baseball insights.

Also I have to say that the graphics and stats on YES were outstanding... much more concise and informative than on FOX or ESPN, and without all the silly little audio gimmicks.

Bottom line... I'm still no Yankees fan but I really have to respect and admire their TV network.

Comments?

I´m more of a radio listener, but I know that the announcers for YES are some combination of Michael Kay, Ken Singleton, Jim Kaat, Paul O´Neill, and one or two more people. Since I don´t watch many broadcasts, I can´t really comment on them, except for Kay, who used to do radio, and whose knowlege of the game I highly respect (and for whom a good replacement still hasn´t been found in the radio booth).

Glad you enjoyed the broadcast.

If that´s the same Jon Miller who does ESPN games, ugh.  vomit  I really feel sorry for Joe Morgan - there aren´t that many places I´d dread being more than in the same broadcast booth as Miller on a Sunday night, and Morgan has a lot of good knowledge to impart, but can´t because Miller is too busy talking about stuff unrelated to the game.

I don´t find ESPN´s graphics to be too intrusive, but you´re spot on about FOX. It´s a damn baseball game, not an action movie - there need not be a mechanical or explosive sound effect every ten seconds.....  Yeah sure

Jim Kaat

Jim Kaat has a fantastic baseball mind, and really is good to listen to, even though I only heard him a couple of times.

I used to be a Sterling fan. I think he´s gone downhill ever since Kay went to TV, but I don´t dislike him.

I may hate WABC (the NYC home of such wonderful characters as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity), but I wish the games were on there again. Not only was the quality of the broadcast better, but WABC´s transmitter actually works, as opposed to WCBS´s, which is prone to interference like you wouldn´t belive.

I subscribe to the MLB package, and I agreed that the YES team is one of the better ones out there as well as the should with what they are paying for broadcast rights. I think the #1 team is a solo act in Vin Scully is the absolute best in describing a game. Another one that can make a 19-1 game fun is Thom Brennaman. What is great about MLB you quickly find out what cities have lousy broadcast teams, sorry about that Tampa; Miami, and the Nationals.

A good team, and you can tell that they have fun together. Even back in the days of Russ Hodges and Lou Simmmons, humor has also played a part in Giants broadcasts whenever the game is out of hand, or is clawing along at a very slow boring pace.

The worse the Giants are doing, the more Kruk and Kuip pay attention to the spectators, focusing in on kids eating hotdogs, people in outrageous costumes, boats in McCovey Cove, and especially, "eliminating" fans with the telestrator, like guys who don't give foul balls to their kids.
