I have two questions regarding my simple home computer network.

First of all, our home is connected via a router, to which three PCs are connected via a LAN. Not sure how relevant that bit is!

The first issue is downloads - is it possible to limit a certain PCs download speed? My brother is downloading loads of wrestling clips and stuff, which is killing my bandwidth - I'd like to be able to rein him in a bit to give me a chance!

Also, how do I connect a printer (connected to one of the other PCs) to the network so that I can use it? Obviously that other PC must be on, but I can't seem to find the printer on our network!

1. What make and model is your router? Some routers offer bandwidth throttling and packet preference.

2. Make sure all the PCs are in the same workgroup. Right click on the printer and select 'Sharing'. Give the printer a share name. On the other PCs, install the driver for the printer, then browse the network for the shared printer. Double click to install. Click here for a more detailed guide.

1) The router is an unknown make known as Solwise - I've been through the menu, but can find no form of limiting. I thought there were other ways, but perhaps thats only if I'm on a proper LAN.

2) Thanks! Will give it a go.

Google 'limit download bandwidth' and you'll find a host of third party applications that can offer that control. As far as I am aware there is nothing native to Windows (if that's your OS) that allows that kind of control.

Try this
Start
Control Panel
System
Click on the Network + sign to open
Click Protocol
On top Click Tools
On drop down, select Remote Computer

What does this give you?

Eh?

Anyway ...

Have a look at http://www.solwise.co.uk/modems.htm and tell us which router we're talking about. The thing you are looking for is QoS (Quality of Service).

In case your router doesn't support QoS - the next best thing is NetLimiter which has to run on your brother's PC (providing he doesn't uninstall/disable it).

You'll find Netlimiter here

D.

The actual router isn't there any more - as a short term fix, I accidentally cancelled some of his downloads  angel
