Poland's Prime Minister Kaczynkski and his twin-brother, who is Poland's President, demands an apologize from the German government and to take action against left German newspaper "Die Tageszeitung" ("The Daily Newspaper") after being portrayed as "rogues" and "potatoes" in a satirical column.
Berlin said they'd neither agree with the form nor with the content of the column but would not apologize.

This is an absolute ridicoulous affair and the Germans would be well advised not to yield in this crap blackmailing..The polish politicians keep using WW2 as an excuse to entertain guilt-feelings within the German population .
Their entrance into the EEC was all but smooth and -as Chirac told them- they missed a great opportunity to shut up ...
Ok, I see one of the moderators changed the title which indeed was a bit missleading. Now we only need to check the spelling of "Charicatures".
Still, this "affair" resembles some of the fuss about the Muhammed cartoons, as Muslims urged the Danish government to apologize. At that time, many have said that something compareable would not be possible in Europe as we enjoy freedom of press here. Apparently we were partially wrong.

Poland, the most homophobic country in Europe...
I would be carefully with such a generalizing statement. The majority of Poles feel embarassed for their government, reports say.

The UK has had a big influx of Poles since 2004.
All working, many well educated, some setting up businesses here.
Others working in labourious crop picking too, sending money home before they go themselves.
But the dynamic ones, nearly all young, have also cited the election of these two last year, with their predujices and reliance of the badly educated and angry to get in power.
The Education Minister wanted a pride march physically attacked.
People in Poland feel the same way about you...trust me. Many other countries breathe a sigh of relief that you are not counted among them.
Now,
Quoting LOT767-300ER (Reply 8): I cant believe you guys care about this, no one in Poland does.
Exactly. This is unfortunate stuff...over a charicature. Jeez...some people need a sense of humor. Besides, it's not like much worse hasn't been drawn in Poland about Andrea Merkel...what's fair is fair.
This government is pretty heavy on the right...with little centre. Oh, how I miss ol' Kwasniak...meh.
This government came into power after a close race between two more right wing candidates...though Donald Tusk was probably more centered. A lot of it has to do with anger about the corruption in past governments (the middle swing-voters of Poland), as well as some post EU enterance reactionary feelings. Some of those feelings come however from legitimate sources...like this genius here...
Quoting Beaucaire (Reply 5): Their entrance into the EEC was all but smooth and -as Chirac told them- they missed a great opportunity to shut up ...
who forgets that Chirac's comment was directed at the less convervative government of Aleksander Kwaskniewski...and that a good source of the not so smooth entry came from France's selfish desire to protect its power structure within the EU.
It also highlights the growing rift between urban and rural Poland...sound familiar anyone?
Every country has this kind of unfortunate crap...this government will be used for what it's intended, then discarded in favor of a new one.
Quoting Beaucaire (Reply 5): This is an absolute ridicoulous affair and the Germans would be well advised not to yield in this crap blackmailing..The polish politicians keep using WW2 as an excuse to entertain guilt-feelings within the German population .
Little do you know that that same Spiegel article highlights internal criticism within' Poland about Kaczynski snubbing the Weimar Triangle summit. And what does the cartoon have to do with WW2...so far only a belligerant Frenchman has brought it up. Kaczynski was offended, and while he clearly needs thicker skin , he was not going off on a WW2 tangent.
With Marcinkiewicz gone, I predict this government will find itself short-lived, if not severely limited.
Poland's dislike of France, could very well grow...but then they'll just have to take a number in that arena.
To sum this story up...
Diagnosis: lack of sense of humor...must have been passed on from Germany
Treatment: There is hope...the Germans have learned to make funnies after the World Cup. So all that's needed is a massive influx of tourism...
Vacation in Poland...your car is already there! (courtesy of LOT767-300ER)
Laugh people...or fireproof the German embassy in Warsaw...whatever works for you.

Excusez -but without money from french and other Europena tax-payers Poland could not have bought american planes...
Chirac had all the rights in this world to criticise Poland for it's less than "eurofriendly" behavior since their entry into the EEC.

Given the huge amount spent (wasted) on unsutainable CAP it's a small miracle there's actually any money left for something else.
Where is your bitching about Spain buying F-18s, Portugal F-16s, Greece F-16s? Hypocrite. Just get a life and get over it.

Sure, Chirac had all the right to make look himself like a total idiot. Once again. Interesting you French always complain about the Poles, it would be iteresting how far Chirac would get with the idiotic comments regarding lack of "eurofriendly" behavior (whatever that means ) of the British. I guess he's too much of pu**y to even try it.

well, those people at LOT + TAROM Zurich who all the time wanted to speak French (unable to talk English or German) were in the 1960ies and 1970ies, a tiny bit after Mr Bonaparte. And supported "traditional ideas"

That does not reflect the population's view of people. It certainly doesnt demise the memories of 1939 and the French saying they will come and help (Yea they came, walking backwards with their hands up without a fight)
That was the attitude because we were shielded from America. No doubt about it that the USA is the country Poland supports more and looks up to, which I am fine with because at least Washington never has mouthed off to us even if the F-16s offsets were weak (and everyone knew it was going to be like that from the beginning)
I dont know who has a better view of this than me, find me someone on here who has lived half their life here in the USA and half in Poland and is a dual citizen and goes back between the countries quite often.
just back to my post. I was the one who had to go to these offices, as the others did NOT like to talk French.
and now to your info. While it is obvious to me that people in Poland have mixed feelings in regard to both Russia and Germany, I am a bit surprised that things like "mourir pour Danzig ? " had long term effects in that way. That the Polish-US-relations are close is simple to understand for whomever has realized how many people of Polish origin live in the USA. BUT, who has "mouthed off to" Poland in recent years ?

Chirac’s approval rate has actually risen sharply last month and is now at 38 %.
“April 18, 2003 - Poland signed a deal this Friday to buy 48 F-16 jet fighters for $3.5 billion, the biggest defence contract by a former Soviet bloc country since the end of the Cold War.”
Poland became officially member of the EEC on April 1 st 2004 but had the assurance that it would become member already four years before that date.
The matter is not a pure matter of dates but a matter of perception within Europe. And fact is, that many believe Poland has stronger ties with Chicago,
Tel Aviv and Washington than with Brussels. It must have gone down like olive oil in Warsaw , when Donald H. Rumsfeld called Poland part of the “New Europe” while the core-countries ware called “Old Europe”…

Chirac's "opportunity to shut up" will be remembered for a long time over here.
IMHO France just can't get over the fact Poland is undoubtedly another middle-to heavyweight player on EU's turf - with low likelihood of subscribing to the Franco-German vision of the EU. They can ridicule and marginalize it the way Beaucarie just showed us because Poland's economic handicap is certainly a problem
Of course, its strong links with the US - regardless of White House admin. - make it even worse.
Quoting ME AVN FAN (Reply 17): While it is obvious to me that people in Poland have mixed feelings in regard to both Russia and Germany
I don't know about Poland but we have an old legend about two brothers, Czech a Lech. Czech like that Rip hill near (future) Prague so he decided to settle with his tribes there because he felt the area is abound with "milk and honey" (IMO it was code name for hops and malting barley ). Lech went up more north and settled in the baltic lowlands. Geopolitically speaking it was not the smartest decision by either one of them, although Czech's was even more stupid because he didn't notice the land where he settled has no goddamn sea!

Please refer us to the specific provision of the EU accession treaty which stipulates that "from now on thou shall buy only Airbus and/or Dassault and/or EADS".

You meant perception in FRANCE or the corridors of EU-city in Brussels, right? Hate to break it you but EU is NOT Europe. The sooner you realize you French DO NOT speak on behalf of the whole Europe the better.

well, I do NOT claim to be a Poland expert, but it is obvious to me that there hardly is a city outside Poland with so many people of Polish origin than Chicago. What is so bad about it ? With Poland inside the E.U., Chicago in a way becomes part of the E.U. !

But France is NOT the E.U.. Poland is NOT the only European country buying military hardware in the USA, so that I canNOT quite see the problem.

Another matter is that the enlargement of the future with Romania, Bulgaria and the Ukraine, moves the centre of E.U.-Europe from the Rhine to -- you guess it ?! --- Prague !! Just look it up on the map, you are sitting right on the middle !!

Where the F*ck did the ascension treaty stipulate that Poland had to buy only Airbus/Dassault, etc!? Get over it Frog! Explain why Poland bought Spanish transports...or German tanks recently! They've bought what suits them from whatever country can provide it...and until France produces something that Poland finds useful, Poland will continue to spend wisely the money granted to them by the WHOLE EU, not just France, which greedily hoards it for CAP.
Chirac's comments were assinine...right down to the level of Bush...and highlights the problem with the French people...they are arrogant...they see themselves as all of Europe...ironic they dig at the Yanks for their own arrogance problem...eh?
Chirac's a class A dipshit...whose comments about British and Finnish cooking led to a bad case of "foot-in-the-mouth" disease concerning the judges for the IOC and the selection of London for the 2012 games.
For a man who is so internationally focused...he has a nasty tendency to shoot his mouth off...he's missed DOZENS of opportunities to shut the feck up.
It's almost a fair wager that despite WW2, most Poles still like Germany more than France...
