As Russia supplies most of Israels oil it would be a good idea if Uncle Vlad turned off the taps. Don't know why he doesnt threaten to.

And why exactly would Russia want to do that???
After all, it's good business for them....

Good business but Syria and Lebanon are their mates and you don't rankle your mates do you?

No, you don't rankle them.
That's why you should consider the large Jewish population in Israel that emigrated from Russia. There are very trong ties between these two countries.

In terms of business: Israel is the "more fluent" business partner for Russia, compared to Lebanon and Syria. Russia wouldn't want to lose the revenues from Israel and be left with little income that could be generated from Lebanon/Syria.

Needless to say, Russia has been remarkably quiet throughout this whole crisis.

I suppose that by supplying oil to Israel Russia would prefer a ruthless business friend to muslim chaos threatening its underbelly.

you may say so even though "ruthless" warrants a BIG discussion.
In fact, my wife is from Israel and we have friends here who are from Lebanon.
Interesting (but friendly) debates these days...

In deed Russia has to be careful, considering the separatist movements in the south of the country (Thechnya rebels...). I don't know how many of the separatist are muslims.

Russia may not want to upset either side in this conflict. If it does, it loses biz and bucks from Israel or has the muslim world spark the separatist movements.

Not too appealing of a choice if you ask me...!

Yup - probably as a concession from Bush et al to "turn a blind eye" should Chechnya pop up in the future or maybe they sold out the Ukraine or something... For some reason Russia has expressed a great interest in that country.
