I thought I would post a trip report from my weekend excursion.

Started on Thursday, the 20th. Picked up a rental car from Enterprise. I got a 06 Chevy Cobalt. Not a bad little car at all. Was very fun to drive. Went back home to pack for the weekend.

Friday morning, woke up at 530 and went and filled up the tank and got some Starbucks to help me wake up. My road trip companion got to my house at 630 and by 645, we were on the road for 6 Flags Magic Moutain. Made pretty good time up there. Took highway 78 west to the 5 north to the 73 north (the toll road. Had to pay $4.75 to use it.) Continued north onto the 405 and finally the 5 to Magic Mountain. I made great time. Left Escondido at 6:45 and pulled into the parking lot at 9:15, even after making a quick 10 minute stop in Valencia so my buddy could get some flip flops.

Was at the park from 10am when it opened until about 4pm. My parents went to the park also so got to hang with them and my lil bro and sis too. At 4pm, we were all hot and tired so we decided to head to my parents hotel and hang by the pool for awhile. My buddy and I left around 6 and went down to drive through Hollywood and West Hollywood as well. Drove thru the Hollywood Hills down to Sherman Oaks where we got dinner and then I dropped him off at his friends house for the night. I hung out there for a bit and decided to head back to Valencia and go to sleep as well. Got on the road at 915 and didn't get back to Valencia until 11:15. Only thing I saw that backed up traffic was two accidents, one at the 5/405 split and another at the 5/14 split.

Woke up Saturday at 6 cause my parents had woken me up with the TV. Couldn't get back to sleep so I went and got in the pool for an hour. Then I went to breakfast with my parents at Marie Calenders and after breakfast, they left to go back home. I, on the other hand, went back to the room to kick back for a few. I was pickin my buddy up at 9 in Sherman Oaks and I finished breakfast with my parents at 8.

Got on the road to Sherman Oaks at 835 and got down there at 9. Picked up my buddy and we were off for Yosemite. Took off north on the 405 to the 5 to the 99. Had lunch and gassed up again in Fresno. Then we continued north on the 41 and go to the Wawona entrance at about 1:30. Got down to the valley about 45 minutes later after stopping off at a few places to take pictures.

Once down in the valley, we took some more pictures of half dome, some water falls and everything else in sight. We had a campsite at Hogden Meadows but my buddy and I didn't feel like camping anymore so we made the journey west to the bay area. We stopped in my old hometown of Livermore and got a room at a Motel 6.

After getting settled in and turning on the AC (was 98 degrees at 8pm), we drove by my 2 old houses and got some dinner at Chili's. Went back to the room and watched some TV and passed out. It had been a long day.

Sunday morning, woke up about 730 and laid around for an hour. We got on the road at 9, taking highway 84 west to the 680 south to 101 south to make our way to Montery. Got to Montery at 1045. We walked down Fishermans Wharf, then walked to Cannery Row. Took the shuttle bus back to the Wharf, got some clam chowder in a bread bowl and then got back in the car at 12:30 and made our way south again, this time stopping in Pismo Beach at about 2:30. Went down and laid in the sun for a bit, had a beer, and went in the water. Got back on the road at 4, destination this time being Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara is a great town. College town all the way. I think I fell in love with State Street. Ended up going to dinner at this place called Madisons. Got 3 appetizers and 2 beers for $20 bucks. This place does daily happy hour. Walked around a bit and halfway on the pier. Got back in the car about 7:30.

Got back on the 101 and instead of taking the 405 to the 5, I elected to stay on the 101 to show my buddy downtown. With a nice view of downtown, the 5 soon approached and I hopped on their to finish up the last 100 miles of the journey.

Ended up getting back to Escondido at 10:45 Sunday evening. All in all, it was an awesome trip. Would sure love to do more trips like that. I drove 1282 miles in 3 days.

Hope you enjoyed the trip report and I'll try to post pics later this afternoon. My buddy has all the pics on his camera. Comments are welcomed.

Growing up in Poway, we would do the same thing. Also did many road trips to Orange County for In-n-Out burgers.

Great road trip.

Haha. Dont have to go to the OC anymore for In-n-Out. Have one in Carmel Mtn Ranch and Mira Mesa.

Lucky bastard.

Although it was worth the trip up there for a hamburger and fries. We'd get a set to go for the drive back.

Lived in Mira Mesa too. Went to Mt. Carmel High (class of '82)

Heard unofficially that there is a huge rockslide blocking 120 from Mariposa for some time to come. Can you confirm this? Could you see it?

I drove past Lee Vining twice last week and considered driving over Tioga Pass into Yosemite. I haven't been over that road since 1962!

Can you still drive anywhere in the Valley? It was already getting to be a problem when I was there last in about 1993.

Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

That's the 140 that is blocked. Didn't try going that way so I didn't see it.

We drove down Southside Dr and Northside Dr.

Indeed I did. Everyone I had a number for was out of town for the weekend. Not many of my friends stayed in Livermore or the Bay Area to go to school.

Obviously you've never seen Ansel Adams' wonderful series of photographs of Motel 6 in Livermore!

Glad you had a good trip. I think we talked about it a little before you went.hope you got some good pics. Yosemite is a beautiful place. The drive thru Big Sur is awesome also; altho I am not sure you went that way.PS I hope you got a good pic from that lookout near Oakhurst on hwy41. I was there in May but it was getting too dark to get a good shot.  Sad

Yeah, we talked a lil bit.

Didn't go thru there on this trip. I lived in the Bay Area for 17 years so I've been to Big Sur before.

We didn't stop and take any pics until we got inside the park. I don't know how the pics came out. I didn't use my camera and I'm at work so I cant get them from my buddy until I go home at 3.

Nice road trip!! The 73 is so smooth, its so hard not to speed. I saw a cop pull this guy in an M5 over, he was doing about 95. Saaaad.

A couple months ago I drove up to Monterey to Laguna Seca to watch some GT series racing. The 101 is so nice from Santa Barbra past Pismo, great scenery.

Thanks for the trip report!

Cheers,
Dave

Surprisingly, I did not really encounter anyone pulled over this weekend, EXCEPT for the CHP doing a crack down on the 156. Right around Seaside, near Montery, they were out in full force. At least 10 motors out there. Seemed like they were targeting mostly crotch rockets.
