Do we have concensus on the Dinner location? T-Shirts?
Anything else we need to copy over form the last thread?
Travel info? Where to meet? Etc?
How about someone posting a map to the range, or at least giving an address? Did I miss that? I should already be in 'Bama by the 4th . . . unless US really screws things up. I'll be about 60 miles west of B'Ham in the middle of no where (town called Berry - no cell tower there, yes it's that small - so I'll give my Mom's phone number to those that need it - just drop me a PM).

Dinner:
No decision has been made, but BHMBAGLOCK's suggestions for "steak" are as follows:
Quote:
Unfortunately Bug Tussle is but a dim memory. Best choices for steaks in Bham are as follow:
Shula's - great but not very convenient to anything else we're doing
Ruth's Chris - good location and always good food there
Copper Grille - also a good location, obscenely expensive but very good
John's - Not a great selection of beef but they do have a super center cut filet and the best burger in town. Great seafood as well. It's also much less expensive than the other options. The Executive Chef is a friend of mine from HS as well - http://www.birminghammenus.com/johns/
Highland's Bar & Grill - Another very expensive option but superb. This is Frank Stitt's original restaurant and they do great steaks and all sorts of unique Southern Cuisine - www.highlandsbarandgrill.com - FWIW, Pat Conroy (Great Santini author) is very vocal about this being his absolute favorite restaurant. As with John's not a huge selection of beef, but like everything else on the menu, it will be perfectly cooked from the very best ingredients, i.e. they use Kobe beef for Carpacchio.
I don't think it will matter to most people (like me) where we eat. I vote for Highland's Bar and Grill.
After dinner, it has been suggested that we go to Barking Kudu www.barkingkudu.com for drinks.
On Saturday morning, unless I misunderstood, we will be meeting at BHMBAGLOCK's work place for the brunch cookout where we can get to know one another before going to the range.
the range is at:
F.O.P. Range Inc.
91 1st Street,
Pleasant Grove Al. 35127

That would be correct if the meet was being held up in North Georgia, as I've heard Banjo Boy works at a Huddle House up in Toccoa.

Looking at the two places mentioned in the quote from the other thread, John's City Diner gets my vote. They seem to me to have the better menu (at least what they have posted online.) than Highland's Bar & Grill.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet (that I know of) is accomodations. A base location to meet up at needs to be established, and perhaps that can be the hotel/motel where the bulk of us are staying at.

He's definitely at the Huddle House in Toccoa washing dishes. Saw him there a few months ago. He has another job doing the same thing part time at yet another local place.

You're just insanely jealous because you love roadkill and your cousin rejected you.....besides....we're not going far enough towards Mississippi to get to where that's legal...
Quoting ANCFlyer (Reply 5): Well, we DO need a moving target downrange . . .
Then I suggest we hire a walrus.....it'll eat less and move faster on the range presenting us with a more economical, more challenging opportunity!

Actually, he's close to correct. The movie was set in GA but filmed in NE AL. The area is now half filled with vacation cabins for rich people. Very beautiful area.
Quoting BMIFlyer (Reply 3): So JGP has officially hijacked the thread, does that mean we can shoot him?
No, I'll just take him camping in one of the less developed areas of the Little River Canyon.

Highlands will normally have more daily items that permanent menu selections. Frank Stitt is a fiend for only working with the best and most fresh ingredients and prefers local as well. The web menu will be less than half of what is available. John's is excellent food for a great price, Highlands is as good as it gets at an outrageous price. I'm happy either way.
I miss the days when my friend Paul worked there in the kitchen (he's now the executive Chef at John's). We'd go eat there and would usually end up being guinea pigs for 2-3 new menu ideas at no charge. Damn good deal!
That was a different guy who recently passed away.

Let's take a vote and see which restaurant we should pick. I'll stay out of it since I've provided all the info and don't want to skew the results. Let's narrow it down to John's and Highlands as these seem to be the only ones being discussed.
If people will let me know their preferences for hotels, i.e. brand, style, price range, etc. I'll make some suggestions there as well. I'm going to try to finish up a guest room by then so I'll tentatively be able to host a few people as I can also have my daughter sleep on the other bunk in my son's room and open up another. If Westy decides to come he can have this room as the pink will suit him.
I'll also check with my parents and see if they would put up a few people. They have two guest rooms and are only 5 minutes from the bar so this would work well. I also have a pop-up that could easily take 2-3 people if anybody's game for it.
Anybody attending from the Bay area? I'll be out there late next month and it would be great to put a face to one or two additional folks before we get together. Currently the only attendee I've met face to face is ANC. I'll most certainly make it to ATL at some point before the meet and will try to look up some of you guys then.
btw, add me to the T-shirt list, XL. Who's going to design it? Maybe we should be shooting at a little piggy with JGP shaved into his ass?

Dinner, meeting place, etc. don't make any difference to me at all, I'm figuring that the local talent will provide the best direction. I'm just looking forward to meeting all of you and maybe some others, doing a little shooting, and hearing some good lies. All of the suggestions presented so far look fantastic and BHMBAGLOCK's home-base hospitality sounds like the icing on the cake. I'll just bet that the place he was talking about in "another forum" would be a good starting point.

Actually Deliverance was filmed in NE Georgia and NW South Carolina. The Chattooga River and the Tallulah River (as it runs through Tallulah Gorge) were the two rivers used as the "Cahulawassee River". For years, there were signs along US-76 east of Clayton directing tourists to where parts of the movie were filmed on the Chattooga (The influx of tourists after the book and movie led to the river being designated a National Wild and Scenic River by the government). The film is still a bit of a sore subject among old timers in the region.
