My favourites would be:

#1 United States
#2 UK

Probably my own country's national anthem on a third place if I could choose

I like Israel's athem, really fits with the nations past. I also find France's anthem, La Marseillaise, very beautiful.

Besides the US national anthem...

I favour the former Soviet national anthem: "Gosudarstvenny Gymn Soyuza Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik".

I recently found the official piano sheet music for this beautiful piece on the "Russian Anthems Museum" website ( http://www.hymn.ru/index-en.html )
and printed it off. (It's the 1977 version, if you want to find it). I play it on the piano nearly every day! It has an honoured place in my large library of sheet music for piano.

I even played it as a solo in a recent concert I gave at my college (King's College London)!

Just a shame that they removed the "Deutschland Über Alles" part of the anthem. That was the greatest part of their anthem Big grin

I would have to go with the following...

1. Italy (Sounds like a fun drinking song, especially at the end.)
2. Russia (Sounds like a cold Russian winter)
3. Canada (Even I sing along with it at hockey games in the US)

Oh my... the full-blown old version, complete with revisionist territorial claims (first verse) and hilarious nonsense (second verse). Small wonder that version is only just sung by neo-nazis nowadays. The embarrassment would surely kill anybody else! Big grin

I'm glad we stuck with just the third verse; That one is actually quite nice.

My own nominees:

- Soviet Union / Russia (fantastic piece!)
- European Union (Beethoven's Ode to Joy - classic!)
- France (incredibly brutal and bloody lyrics!)
- Japan (a bit weird, but cool!)

Question: Does the Vatican state have an actual national anthem?

I have to wonder how much hearing some of these anthems influences our choices. I watch a lot of American sports, and the anthem or God Bless America and Oh Canada are always performed.

With that said, I have also lived thoughout the Caribbean and Central America and I must say there are others here which are pretty good.

In no order I would suggest you at least check the words and music of:

Belize, Trinidad, Jamaica and yes, even the Bahamas.

Since I'm in USA, that one will be #1 for me...
But Sweden is #2 due to that being my 'heritage' country..
And Denmark has some good music in theirs also...

BTW, based on this, anyone know where I can find a good quality MP3 of the Swedish anthem with lyrics being sung?

I must say that the melody of the French national anthem does not appeal to me whatsoever. I do like the first line, however, "Come children of the Fatherland, the day of glory has come."
