Next Thursday (August 17th) I might be heading over to SXM for a day from SJU on American Eagle for 8 hours. My flight would arrive at 9:00 A.M. and my departing flight would leave at 5:16 P.M. I have a schedule for the aircraft that will arrive on Thursdays. My question is should I spend the 8 hours all on Maho or are there any other spots around that I should try out? This will probably the only time I get out to SXM for another 5 years.

Quoting Mirrodie (Reply 9): Have a blast. stay at Sunset Beach bar OR that other bar directly opposite it on the other side of the beach. And enjoy. Take a few pics but dont sit there trying to catch the perfect SXM photo.
and stand behind a jet with sunglasses and get sandblasted. its fun
You can find further instruction on how to do this safely here:
Thanks Mario, that's exactly what I was planning on doing. I'm bringing the video camrea with me (along with the camrea) and will set it down on the beach during the landings and take offs so I can enjoy the experience through my own eyes!

I did a one day trip at SXM during a cruise ship stop in Jan-06. I recommend taking a taxi from the airport to Orient Beach. You can do some sunnning and drinking there. For $10.00 USD, you can rent a lounge chair, umbrella and even get a cocktail from one of the beach bars.
Around noon, you can then make you way to Maho by taxi. You will get to see the afternoon bank of flights. The KLM 744 should be coming in on Thursday.
The Sunset Beach Bar right on Maho Beach has cold beer and good beach food. Try the fried grouper fish and spicey tarter sauce.
There are also deli/convenience stores within walking distance. Just ask.

I was there on Thurs Aug 10/06 and here is the following flights I encountered between 13:30-15:45
All the planes were on the ground and turned around by 15:45 (Corsair was the last departure) aside from the AA B752 (departs at 16:15) and AF A343 (departs around 17:00).
If you do venture outside of the Maho area, do so earlier in the day as going back to Phillipsburg took 50 minutes (16:00-16:50) rather than the usual 20 minutes due to "rush hour" and the T-junction leading to Phillipsburg.
Maho beach was also relatively washed out essentially leaving just 10 feet of beach to lie on.

Quoting Jkw777 (Reply 5): There is a Beach Bar that serves food and drinks, or there is a Chinese place just up from that.
The food isn't that great, but its decent.
Quoting Miamiair (Reply 6): Go to the Sunset Beach Bar and hang out there. You have the beach, food, booze, babes and airplanes...
I'd stick around here too. The food was good, plenty of drinks, airplane action if you get the right times for the heavies, and lots of women. When I was there, topless women drank free, so you might just get lucky!

Absolutely the Sunset Beach Bar. Obviously, don't use a tripod behind departures. Tip: take and donate to the bar a local automobile license plate for their worldwide collection. Surely you have an old tag or can find a discarded one. You'll be in favor with the bar-keeps if you can donate. Regards...jack
