SXM For A Day, Suggestions?

Next Thursday (August 17th) I might be heading over to SXM for a day from SJU on American Eagle for 8 hours. My flight would arrive at 9:00 A.M. and my departing flight would leave at 5:16 P.M. I have a schedule for the aircraft that will arrive on Thursdays. My question is should I spend the 8 hours all on Maho or are there any other spots around that I should try out? This will probably the only time I get out to SXM for another 5 years.

Thanks!

although never been there, I would stick around Maho...but hey, you've gotta do whatever you like best.

best wishes on your trip,

Yeah stick around Maho, not much can be done unless you planned ahead, Maho or Mullet beach.

Sorry I moved from SXM, looking for a new house on Anguilla now!

Rent a car. Go to the French side, Marigot and Grand Case, with a friend and eat. Go to a real beach, such as Orient. Shop in Philipsburg. Back to the airport.

Apparently I've already done the island when I was 1. The whole point of the trip really is to experience the airport.

If you're purely going for the entertainment of aviation, I would suggest sticking to Maho. There is a Beach Bar that serves food and drinks, or there is a Chinese place just up from that.

The Beach is great, the planes coming in soo low are great, I can highly recommend sticking around Maho! Big grin

I would jump at the chance to go back to St. Maarten, so enjoy it!  Smile

Regards,
Justin

I was there last month, and it is amazing how the terminal construction is progressing.

Go to the Sunset Beach Bar and hang out there. You have the beach, food, booze, babes and airplanes...

The only thing that is a variable is the weather. This time of year the tropical waves are a dime a dozen, so take that into consideration.

So I'm all set for SXM! I plan to wear a bathing suit and bring a towel in my back pack so I can do some swimming and some beach bumming while I wait for the planes to come in.

I printed out a schedule and I chose Thursday specifically so I could see all three long-haul planes.

Hopefully the weather will be nice but I know the Caribbean in August so I'm aware of those showers but even if it is cloudy and rainy I'll still enjoy it.

Very excited!

Have a blast. stay at Sunset Beach bar OR that other bar directly opposite it on the other side of the beach. And enjoy. Take a few pics but dont sit there trying to catch the perfect SXM photo.

live it
breathe it
experience it.

and stand behind a jet with sunglasses and get sandblasted. its fun

You can find further instruction on how to do this safely here:

A'buses, Boeings, Boobs, Babes + Beer At SXM (pics+videos) (by Mirrodie Apr 11 2006 in Trip Reports)

Thanks Mario, that's exactly what I was planning on doing. I'm bringing the video camrea with me (along with the camrea) and will set it down on the beach during the landings and take offs so I can enjoy the experience through my own eyes!

I did a one day trip at SXM during a cruise ship stop in Jan-06. I recommend taking a taxi from the airport to Orient Beach. You can do some sunnning and drinking there. For $10.00 USD, you can rent a lounge chair, umbrella and even get a cocktail from one of the beach bars.

Around noon, you can then make you way to Maho by taxi. You will get to see the afternoon bank of flights. The KLM 744 should be coming in on Thursday.

The Sunset Beach Bar right on Maho Beach has cold beer and good beach food. Try the fried grouper fish and spicey tarter sauce.

There are also deli/convenience stores within walking distance. Just ask.
Have fun!

I was there on Thurs Aug 10/06 and here is the following flights I encountered between 13:30-15:45

Corsair B744
AA B752
AA B752
CO B737
AF A343
DL B752
AA B752
US A320

All the planes were on the ground and turned around by 15:45 (Corsair was the last departure) aside from the AA B752 (departs at 16:15) and AF A343 (departs around 17:00).

If you do venture outside of the Maho area, do so earlier in the day as going back to Phillipsburg took 50 minutes (16:00-16:50) rather than the usual 20 minutes due to "rush hour" and the T-junction leading to Phillipsburg.

Maho beach was also relatively washed out essentially leaving just 10 feet of beach to lie on.

Enjoy it!

The food isn't that great, but its decent.

I'd stick around here too. The food was good, plenty of drinks, airplane action if you get the right times for the heavies, and lots of women. When I was there, topless women drank free, so you might just get lucky! Big grin

Take a camera, hit Maho, take pictures of the pretty topless girls and pray that a KL 747 comes in as low as this AOM DC-10 did.  bigthumbsup

Absolutely the Sunset Beach Bar. Obviously, don't use a tripod behind departures. Tip: take and donate to the bar a local automobile license plate for their worldwide collection. Surely you have an old tag or can find a discarded one. You'll be in favor with the bar-keeps if you can donate. Regards...jack

I would think thats hard for the time he has. I found driving in St. Maarten (at least the Dutch side) confusing and a pain.

Yes, and get the $1 shots there. They are kind of weak but they taste soo good.

I would also recommend staying at Maho. You can visit the Casino, go to the bar, have a nice Italian food lunch at Sopranos, and also watch SXM landings as well.
