I'm looking at flying out to New York for a couple of days (October 12th-October 16th). I am gonna fly into ISP (can't beat $232 from San Diego) and then my friend is gonna drive out from the Hamptons to pick me up. I'm gonna hang out there for Thursday evening and also Friday.

Then Saturday, we are talking about taking the train to NYC. Then we are gonna stay in a hotel Saturday and Sunday and take the train back Monday.

Questions I have is how easy is it to use LIRR?

Seems like the hotels are somewhat expensive which can be expected. Seems like the lowest rates are on the upper west side (near 98th and Broadway). How close is this to Manhattan and is the subway station near this area?

Any help is appreciated.

98th St. is Manhattan, as far as I know. There should be a bunch of trains near there, and if you want to know how to get somewhere with the subway, use www.hopstop.com, it's like Mapquest for subways.

I don't know the NY subway system that well, since I only use two lines, and never go above 57th st.

Im not from NYC. But I take the train to NYC alot and the LIRR is pretty easy. Espcially on weekends. Just get your tickets and it takes you to Penn Station. But do keep in mind that there are fewer trains on weekends.

Not difficult - you just get on the train and ride it.  Smile The further out you go on the Island, the less frequent the trains become, so head over to www.mta.info and take a look at the schedules and fares. One thing to note is that the LIRR is not the most on-time of rail networks. And Penn Station isn't great, but overall it's better than having to find a parking spot in the city.

I live very close to there. It's definitely in Manhattan, but a fair distance from the main attractions. Fortunately, the 1, 2 and 3 lines stop at 96th Street and Broadway (the 1 also stops at 103rd and Broadway), and they get you into Midtown and elsewhere really fast.

It's very easy to use the LIRR. Just check out their schedules...their weekend train frequencies are quite decent.

Look on hotels.com for good hotel rates. You can get to midtown Manhattan using the 2/3 express trains in 10-15 minutes.

I hear there are some good restaurants in the area of 141st St. Just ask the locals, they should know which ones to go to.

There are some decent restaurants in the 96th Street area as well, including arguably the best slice pizza in the city.

correct

I live in New York and I can tell you that the train system is excellent; very easy to use. Mir is correct, use mta's website and LIRR's website as they are your best resources.

Jusy curious to know which hotel you are looking at on 96th? My fiance is on 89th and I know she has had friends stay up there but some "Hotels" are more like hostels.

Probably not going to stay in the upper west side. Looking at a place down on 36th right across from Penn Station. Or I may end up crashing at my freinds best friends house in Manhattan. Don't know where the friend lives though.

SDPD, The best way of getting into the city from LI is to take the Hamptons Luxury Liner - beats the LIRR any day.

You will have a great time in the Hamptons (really gorgeous in October), and it will be too painful a contrast to land up near 36th Street. Stay at your friend's friend, or stay near Times Square - there are a couple of tiny but affordable hotels there (Night, for example).

Glad to answer any other questions not addressed so far. Have a great time.

future sdpdcop...

LIRR frequencies from east hampton, bridgehampton, southampton, etc.. are frequent on the weekends, but the train is slow and usually arrives late, plus you need to change in jamaica. although, it is fun and there a lot of cute girls coming back from weekends out east. if you can afford it, i recomend taking the jitney (better frequencies, quicker, guaranteed seat). http://www.hamptonjitney.com

as for hotel, dont stay on the upper west side, you want to be in midtown. go to hotels.com, there are dozens of places in much better locations you can hit for under $200 a night. by across from penn station, if you were thinking the hotel pennsylvania, dont stay there, its a piece of shit.

have a nice time.

ps- im a gs-1811 for a major agency. best wishes for your future career.
