I have a message that says:

READ ONLY MEM HAS FAILED....What can I do about his or at least get rid of that message under Messages??? This has not happened the first time. The first Garmin 89 Handheld GPS had the same issue but it got stolen. Now this has happened again. Its been working great for a long long time and suddenly today actually I got that message...But during this time it seems to work OK....

How canI solve this? Please?

The read only memory probably holds the operating system and/or fault memory.
If it still does not work it seems the operating system can't be loaded anymore which means you have to visit the repair shop.

The other possibility is that the device runs a check right after power up and stores failures in a "novram" (nonvolatile memory).
In this case the device might be working normally and there is just the fail message left that at one time it didn't start up.

Any suggestions pleasse, and how can I get rid of that message thing under the messages page? I just wanna FIX THIS MYSELF if it still powers up and works normally...Can post how to fix this please if you can?? I dont know why the Garmin 89's do this all the time...This is not the first time....Can it be the battery? I just just in yesterday night those AA TITANIUM e2 batteries...

And what operating system does it run? LINUX or Garmin's proprietory operating system?

If Im willing to fix this myself, what should I do...I dont really wanna take to a shop becuase its going to be Very very EXPENSIVE!!!!

Read number 33. Looks VERY serious.....I have to ship it to Garmin...But were in the heck I can find a GArmin shop around my area. I live in SOCAL....Los Angeles...And think its going to be very pricey too. But I dont understand why does it work??? Or, it may die all of a sudden...There is a Ham Radio Shop, can they even ship this to Garmin??

I also still wondering If I can fix this myself...Can I??

Sure. Just take it apart and connect your Garmin diagnostic connector to the Garmin diagnostic port on the PCB. Start up the Garmin diagnostic software on your laptop and run a diagnostic. Make sure to fully dump the FPGA. My guess is the EEPROM settings have been wiped out. You can just reprogram them (from the REPROGRAM menu).  Yeah sure

Your original post and this reply were seperated by more than 12 hours. Why couldn't you just try it and see?

Is there any chance this belongs in Non-Av?

Well, it means the read-only memory has failed.

If you don't know how to fix it yourself then don't even try. Have you ever tried to "fix" a memory chip? It's probably soldered directly to the board and you could cause a lot of damage if you don't know what you're doing. Garmin would probably replace a component or, more likely, a complete board complete with components. I really doubt that you can fix it yourself if you have no experience.

What I'll do is this...First call Garmin, and see whats up...Then after Aug. 4, because I wanna do a project with this because its still operational, is to FedEx it to Garmin overnight...And they can fix it...I dont have the right proper tools to do this myself and its a bit risky too.

1. ***Anyway...WHY IS THIS KEEP On happening with Garmon 89's??? And how can I prevent this from further happening again??****

I will call Garmin ASAP...

And in the meantime, I can I rid of the message?? Its really annoying to even see its there.

Buy the unit from Garmin or an authorized vendor and enforce the warranty that comes with it.
How much have you saved by buying on ebay?

I don't suppose this has anything to do with trying to "hack" the device to go higher than 999 MPH or 99,999 ft does it?

Garmin Handheld GPS Question

If that is the case, I don't think this is the sort of thing covered in the warranty.

It sounds like you really screwed up the ROM. Unless it is an EEPROM I don't think you can fix it yourself. Even then you need special tools and the original software the device came loaded with. Try to call Garmin and tell them what happen, leave out the part about trying to hack the device and hopefully they will take it back and repair it for you. If its still under warranty then the repair should be free but you probably have to pay shipping.
