So she wants to travel from Wales to Brisbane by train, bus and ship to avoid taking the "environmentally unfriendly" plane?

http://babs2brisbane.blogspot.com/

I should really email her to tell her about all the flights I've taken this year alone with the purpose just to fly.

What a buffoon. Does she not consider the source of power for the trains, ships, and busses? There really is no help for some dumbasses out there.

She's apparently planning to get to Australia via Russia - err, that's the long way round love ! And all those trains and buses in Russia, what do they run on ? Borsht ? Clearly a silly cow. I bet she ends up on a plane, despite her hairy-legged sandal-wearing protests to the contrary.

Oh great. Reading the posts you guys have made over there I wish I hadn't posted this at all. I thought we were capable of neutrally proving that planes are cleaner than she thinks, but some of you guys posted personal attacks that have nothing to do with the point.

Which only makes us look stupid.
Which is the opposite of what we were trying to achieve.

It's really simple, but apparently too hard for some of you to figure out.

And by doing that, you reach exactly the opposite of what you want to.

Thanks to you, people over there will think aviation enthusiasts are childish and uneducated. Which is what you are, but not the rest of us.

Yes those nastily regulated airplanes versus those grease-dropping trains, axle grease seeping into the soil. How could she be wrong?

Probably so. For those who care to look objectively at the amount of fuel used per unit of passenger or cargo transported, ships are the most efficient form of transportation followed by rail. Air travel is the most inefficient form of transportation. Yes ships and trains are also fossil fuel dependant but they are capable of hauling much greater volumes of goods or passengers, making their amount of pollution per unit transported miniscule compared to that of the most efficient airplane. At present, total weight of the average US freight train is between 10 and 15 thousand tons, only 400 or 500 tons being that of the locomotive power units. There's no rational or logical argument to be made-ship and rail transportation are more energy efficient and are thus more environmentally friendly than aviation.
