EWR Or LGA To Manhattan?

What's the faster and/or cheaper airport to Midtown Manhattan, EWR or LGA? Thanks.

EWR Gates to Penn station - 30 minutes. I have done it countless times.

Take the AirTrain from EWR to the Newark Airport Train station and then NJT (New Jersey Transit, as opposed to Amtrak which is more expensive and not as frequent) to Penn Station. Or take NJT from Newark Airport to Newark Penn Station, cross the platform to the PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson) trains to Manhattan.

Cost for example one $14.00 one way.
Cost for example two $7.50 for NJT and $1.50 for PATH one way ($9.00)

Airtrain EWR is a monorail that takes you right from inside Terminals A, B, C to the Newark Airport rail link station (less than 1/4 mile), there you board either an NJ Transit or Amtrak train for the 25-30 minute ride to Penn Station on 34th Street in Manhattan.

Not always true. It is hit or miss with NY traffic, I have driven from LGA to midtown in about 10 to 15 minutes several times during the work week on some days. It is traffic on the Van Wyck heading to JFK that I always seem to have a problem with.

Surprisingly, LGA to Midtown is traffic-free quite often (Triboro to the FDR). Of course, once you get off the FDR and onto the city streets, things tend to slow down, but LGA doesn't have nearly the traffic problems JFK has, and EWR means either the Holland, Lincoln or GWB, and we know how those can get.

Not without a taxi ride - it's quite a hike, probably 2 - 3 miles, and there really isn't anywhere safe to walk (highways and such, no sidewalks, etc.)

One can get to the 7 train from LGA, but not at Shea Stadium. One has to take a bus to Roosevelt-Jackson Avenues (I think), and then you can get on the 7, or the E, F, V or R trains (the G as well on weekends).

All three use underwater tunnels to get from NJ to NYC.

Amtrak is certainly not cheap, and NJ Transit is not delay-free. Plus, unless your destination is in the immediate area of Penn Station, you'll have to take a cab from there anyway, unless you want to deal with luggage on the subway (can be done, but isn't that pleasant, particularly if you have a lot). By the time you've gotten on the AirTrain out of EWR, waited for NJTransit, arrived at Penn Station, made your way to the taxi line, and took a cab to where you're going, a cab from LGA would have probably been faster (and much less hassle).

This depends on where in Midtown you want to go, while you can take Airtrain and then NJTransit to Penn, it isn't the cheapest, and is subject to commuter rail delays. Plus it isn't convenient for anywhere on the East side. The closest airport by far is LGA, you can take the M60 bus from LGA to 125th st and then transfer to the East Side #6 and go anywhere on the East side or stay on for the West side #1 or A or D train. depending on where you want to go can be faster than Newark and of course it will cost you $2.00.

And you have the benefits of possibly flying the Flushing approach with LGA, the only approach in Newark is of the industrial wasteland of NJ.

LGA to Manhattan via cab ($21 plus $4 toll) is the quickest way in at any time of day. You can do the trip in 13 minutes from the Marine Terminal, 15 from the Main Terminal, and 17 minutes from the USAir Terminal with 95% confidence. If your destination is on the East Side, it's a no-brainer. Hope this helps.

The geek in me has also figured out 95% intervals for JFK (55 minutes) and EWR (1hr 20 mts) using a car service from the Upper East Side. If I use these numbers, I would miss every 20th flight, so I usually add 15 minutes to get a 99% interval (miss 1 flight per 100) as a working protocol.

Amtrak and NJ Transit use the same pair of former Pennsylvania Railroad tunnels under the Hudson River to Access Pennsylvania Station at 34th Street in Manhattan.

The PATH uses two former Hudson and Manhattan tunnels to Access the World Trade Center and 33rd street via Greenwich Village.

This is the way I go everytime I go to NYC. It's cheap and although it takes a little time to me it's worth it since I can buy an all day pass for the bus and the subway system. Of course I'm not dragging luggage and if I were I might reconsider and take a cab but LGA has it all ove EWR in my opinion and I worked for CO.

 checkmark  I've done it both ways and MUCH preferred LGA. Getting from the terminals to the train at EWR dragging along any sort of luggage can be a right royal pain.

TRUE. I've hit horrid traffic at LGA at 1:00pm. Just a few nights ago we went to Manhatten from the EWR area with no traffic whatsoever, easily the weirdest night ever. Driving back to NJ, there was no one ahead of us in the Lincoln Tunnel.
