Would anyone be up for an ORD gathering on Saturday, January 5th?

There are several flights that you can get out of ORD on this day right in the $100 range round trip, same day return. Examples: IND, DSM, there's probably more... This gets us past security and into the terminal.

Plane spotting....
Flying...
Mileage building.....

Anyone? Most importantly, I'll be in ORD on that day  Big grin

Let me know. I hope these fares don't disappear soon.

Well, if you can scrape together $100 or convince a family member to charge it, let me know...

That sounds good! I'd be more than happy to go and meet some of my fellow Airliners.net colleagues.

But I think that we would need to iron out some fine details here.:

1) With the new security measures in place it's going to be tough getting into the terminals if you don't have a ticket for any of the airlines served by those terminals. So for those flying in, we can't assume that everyone will be taking the same airline. What if say Person A comes in on Northwest and Person B comes in on American and we all want to go to the United Terminal. It's going to be a bit difficult.

2) And also, for those of us who don't have to fly in (such as myself) we will not be holding tickets so it's going to be impossible for us to get to the terminals as well as the concourses.

Just potential problems off the top of my head. Any ideas?

I hadn't though of it that way. My original thought was for people already in the Chicago area to buy a cheap ticket to get into the terminal, actually get to fly that day instead of looking at other people fly, and then stay a little longer to spot, probably at the Delta gates where you can see over to the international terminal but it really doesn't matter to me. The main event is getting to take advantage of a $100 rt fare and have a good excuse to do so.

I've done a bit more searching. These places are right around the $100 range for a day trip out of ORD.

GRR
DSM
IND
MKE
MSN

PIT ***81.50!

LGA, BOS, IAD, PHL are around $130

Damn I hope these fares last. Gathering or not I think I will be making a milage run out of ORD that day.

If something formal gets established, I'd seriously look into getting a ticket.

Mls515,

What are your potential routes for your planned mileage run? That sounds very interesting, I might do that if I have someone to tag with (mileage runs get pretty boring doing them by yourself sometimes). Also, are you going more for miles or segments for that day? And what airline?

It would be nice to pick a routing that offered a variety of types or maybe one last run on a 727.

Overnight the fares did change for AA but NW and US haven't. Maybe some others. Right now I'm leaning toward something like this:

If booked on nwa.com there is probably more options and it would be $10 less.

Option 1: 1 adult @ USD 97.50
plus USD 10.00 per ticket Ticket(s): USD 97.50
Service Charge: USD 10.00
TOTAL: USD 107.50

Flight: Northwest Airlines flight 174 on an Airbus Industrie Jet - non-stop
Depart: Chicago, IL OHare (ORD) - Sat, Jan 05 at 9:00am
Arrive: Detroit, MI (DTW) - Sat, Jan 05 at 11:15am

Flight: Northwest Airlines flight 1867 on an Airbus Industrie Jet - non-stop
Depart: Detroit, MI (DTW) - Sat, Jan 05 at 12:00noon
Arrive: Grand Rapids, MI (GRR) - Sat, Jan 05 at 12:53pm

Flight: Northwest Airlines flight 1520 on a McDonnell Douglas DC9 Jet - non-stop
Depart: Grand Rapids, MI (GRR) - Sat, Jan 05 at 2:45pm
Arrive: Detroit, MI (DTW) - Sat, Jan 05 at 3:39pm

Flight: Northwest Airlines flight 439 on a Boeing 727-200 Jet - non-stop
Depart: Detroit, MI (DTW) - Sat, Jan 05 at 4:55pm
Arrive: Chicago, IL OHare (ORD) - Sat, Jan 05 at 5:02pm

That itinerary looks real good!

How many total miles?

I have Northwest's Worlperks and United's Mileage Plus. Preferably, I would rather do United for a mileage run but if Northwest is cheaper than United then I'd do NW.

If you have time do you think you might be able to check United fares? If not don't worry about it.

Is anyone else interested in going?

Aw United? I'll be flying UA DSM-ORD and ORD-DSM on either side of this run.  Smile

Yea, if NW works for you I think that would be the best. Let me do some checking. I'll see if I can track down and itenerary that takes us to somewhere more interesting than GRR (no offense), possibly getting a 727 and DC-9-10.

Don't they give you a minimum of like 500 miles per segment or is that only on some other airlines?

Lemme check....

DAMN! It looks likt most of those $100 fares have very recently been withdrawn or sold out. About all that's left is US Airways to Pittsburgh and back for $81.50.

Um.... What should be do?

Are you serious? They're gone?  Sad Nothing against USAir but I would rather fly either NW or UAL over them. Maybe we should wait a couple of days, maybe even next week and check out the load factors.

I'll check on UAL fares tomorrow for flights ORD-PIT. I do remember them being around the $80 range when I checked last week. Let's see what I find. But chances are the equipment will be a 737. I don't know how game you are for that. It also decreases our chances of being able to listen to the pilots on the headphones if it's a 737.

Yes, United does give you a 500 mile minimum on all flights less than 500 miles. They also have an offer now that allows you to accumulate double miles wherever you fly. But you have to fly before Dec. 15 and that's too soon for me.

But we'll see what we find.

Agreed. Let's wait on it and see if anything else comes up. I've already flown a US 737 from PIT, so wouldn't really jump to do it again (unless I really had a reason to travel there).
