MN Twins Broadcaster Drops Two F-Bombs On Live TV!

Bert Blyleven, broadcaster for the Minnesota Twins televison network uttered the F-bomb twice during a pregame opening segment. Blyleven thought the segement was being taped, but instead it went out live on the air.

Story from the Minneapolis StarTtibune: http://www.startribune.com/509/story/654047.html

The clip was shown on the KARE 11 news in Minneapolis tonight and basically this is what he said live on air: "All right, were going to do this ****ing thing again because I ****ed this up."

He is expected to be suspended for two games by the Twins and the team is waiting to hear from the FCC to see what further penalties will be applied.

I have tried to find a link to the video, but haven't found anything yet.

Big f*cking deal.

He apologized right away, and he obviously didn't intend to say those things. Accept the fact that he screwed up and move on. No need for fines, firings or anything like that. People make mistakes.

Of course, the family values groups will be all over the FCC on this, demanding that he be strung out to dry. It's pretty shameful.

Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

Who gives a flying f*uck. He screwed up, it's not like he did it knowing that he was on air, that would have been something different. It's not like he showed showed his breast or anything...

Do any of you care at all about anyone's professional conduct?

I don't care about whether or not it is okay to use that kind of language on radio or television - that is a separate discussion. The entire point, the one and only point is that AT THIS MOMENT in history it is not okay.

So, is it okay if a broadcaster does this thinking that it can be edited out by flunkies later on?

Is it okay if the dentist drills the wrong tooth in your head?

Is it okay if the cab driver delivers you to the wrong address?

Is it okay if the pilots land you at the wrong airport?

Are there to be ANY consequences for being really shitty at your job?

Of course there are. But Bert had a baseball career that spanned 2 decades, and has been a Twins announcer for the past 10 years. There's been no issues in the past that I can recall that involve him, this was a mistake. If it was a consistent thing, then I would support him being reprimanded. But this does not make him shitty at his job.

Well, the FCC cares...and that will be a $400 million dollar fine, please.

Because, thanks to an unfortunate nipple ring incident during a major sporting event in recent memory, the government must protect our children against the word "fuck" and a woman's right tit. Naturally, of course, it is infinitely better to expose said children to mutilated, broken, bleeding, or dead bodies lying around on public streets and such. God forbid, however, that their sensitive little minds be destroyed by a word or a boob.

Let the flaming begin. But, expect a big, fat "**** ***" in return.

If it pisses off the right, I'm all for it.

None of those are ok. And dropping the F-bomb on live TV isn't ok either. But I see no reason to lead Bert Blylevn to the gallows for an honest mistake. And I don't think you can compare the effects of a dentist drilling the wrong tooth to the effects of saying f*ck on live TV. One is a medical problem that takes money, time and pain to correct. The absolute worst that could happen out of the other is that some parent somewhere is going to have to explain to their kid that Blyleven said a bad word that he shouldn't have said, and that it's not ok for them to do that.

I have no problem with him missing the broadcast for a few days. But for the FCC to start mass finings over this, and maybe get him fired is ridiculous.

Absofuckinlutely!!

Unfortunately you (and I) are recalling a reality that is entirely forgotten by 99% of people today. Maybe it's the x'ers fault with songs like "My United States of whatever". But the reality is wages are so low; and crappy jobs are so plentiful, nobody gives a fuck. Show me $100K/year without a college degree and I'll show more professionalsim then you can stand. Pay me for shit, guess what you are going to get.

Around here..one "f-bomb"--accidental or not--will cost you your job.
Just the times in which we live. See the current thread on the 9-11 movie , and the "furor" over airing "Saving Private Ryan" as perfect examples.

You can go work for Wal*Mart, work your way up, and be a Store Manager and easily make $100K.

Oh yea.. not going to work for you because, well, it's Wal*Mart of course.. and the fact that you "have to work your way up." I guess you meant "show me a job that starts at 100K a year w/o a college degree." Well please show me a job that starts at 100K even WITH a college diploma.

Yea..

Substitute Lowe's, Home Depot, and other large stores for Wal*Mart and you can make 100K a year w/o anything but a HS ticket.

-Or- better yet.. go start your own damn business.. many, many grass cutting businesses start out and in a few short years, can be making easily $100K working cutting in the summers and pushing snow in the winters.. oh, yea, its that thing about work again....

Back to the point at hand. You do NOT say certain words on air. Just like in any other business, there are things you do and don't do. If my job depended upon me not swearing, I'd not only stop on the air, I'd tend not to do it at all.. that way there shouldn't be any way of doing by accident. I don't understand what's so hard about that.

I was actually watching the pre-game when Bert dropped his f-bombs, and I almost fell off my couch I was laughing so hard.

Shhhhh.... don't tell this to news reporters. I love watching them on the satellite before they go live on TV. Those cameras and mics get left on a lot  Smile
FOX News' Shepard Smith is a good actor. He puts on a good TV appearance yet when it's commercial break he lights up a cigarette and cusses like a sailor.

CNN’s Kyra Phillips found this out first hand recently. Not only was the word "Assholes" heard loud and clear over the president's speech, but she referred to her sister-in-law as a "control freak". Now there's a Thanksgiving dinner that should be interesting this year.

That was a great rant. They still play it now and again on WEEI here in BOS right before the "Whiner Line."

It now looks like Blyleven will be suspended for a total of five games. The Twins have already said that he will not lose his job over this and it is believed that he is close to signing a multi-year contract extension.

The FCC has not made any rulings yet although it is believed that a very large fine will be thier most likely course of action.
