Brocky is a motorsports legend just like Mario Andretti - neither of them could keep away from driving cars fast, well after their retirement from full-time professional motorsports.

Brocky's profile as a racing driver, even well after his retirement, is greater than any other current motor racing name locally - he has truly transcended his (niche) sport to be a true Australian icon. To say he is Australia's Dale Earnhardt would be an understatement - he is always known as the driver in car 05.

Unfortunately motor racing has come back to bite Brocky. How sad. I never watched him race until his twilight years with Holden Racing Team (it's worth remembering he was the one who brought HRT back to prominence in the mid-90s). He has certainly done a lot for motorsports here in Australia.

May he rest in peace.

Sad Really sad news. I have to admit (pardon my ignorance) I've heard the name before, but I wasn't terribly familiar with Mr. Brock. Perhaps I'd know him if I heard his voice. However he sounds like a legend, and an inspiration to motor sports. Even though he retired in 97 it sounds like he still had a strong desire to compete in motor racing. It's something you're born with and cannot be turned off I imagine. RIP Mr. Brock. Clear skies forever.

Dave

Another Aussie icon gone.......... what a bloody awful month this has turned out to be here in Australia. Three in one month Don Chipp - a gutsy former politician, Steve Irwin, and now Aussie's motor racing legend  confused  ........ what next can happen

RIP Peter - you and Holden went arm in arm.

I am in shock....

I was at Bathurst in 1972 for his first Victory there.. and I was there the last time he raced there as well...

Damn.... not sure what else to say.

Very sad news. A work colleague got an email from her husband when the news broke - we thought it was a joke at first, given what happened to steve Irwin, then others started getting emails.

Brocky was also a passionate road saftey campaigner. His 05 number comes from .05, the legal blood alchool limit here in Victoria & elsewhere in Australia. He started racing with the 05 number when the limit was introduced in the mid 70's

2 Aussie legends gone in a week & both died doing what they loved.

I saw him at Bathurst in 1997.

Damn shame, but at least he went doing something he loved.

RIP No. 05

Really sad indeed. Goodbye to the King of the Mountain. I imagine that at the Bathurst 1000 next month there will be massive tributes.

We lost Don Chipp last week. He may not have been a high profile showmen like Brock or Irwin but you can't deny the guy was as passionate about his cause as Brock or Irwin.

Man... unreal week in Australia. First Irwin, and now this...

I've seen Brockie drive the mountain before (on TV), and he looked like a natural on one of the most difficult tracks on the planet.

He was a legend and a gentleman. Always had time for the fans and the kids.

Will be the biggest Bathurst ever I'd say and there will be a full on tribute to Brocky no doubt! Maybe all the surviving 05 cars coming out to do some laps?

hmmm well you've had the tv celeb, had the motorsport legend, next perhaps a musician? If its thing in 3's about icons then the balance would be Kylie Minogue I would say in terms of their places in Australian culture.
