So I installed Vista last night using my 'main' computer on a hard drive that I.... acquired, and everything was fine.
Now the computer show is in town (marketproshows) and I decide to get my own HDD for Vista so i can take back the one I ummm borrowed.
I also decided to pick up a power supply for my 'server' that while the existing one works, the fan is shot.
So I get the HDD (A Western Digital refurb) SATA 40 GB for $22
and
350 Watt Power supply (used) for $6.
Plug the drive into my system, and no surprise the heads are clicking like an ace of spades rattling in a kids bicycle spokes.
Plug the Power supply into my 'server' and it powers up fine, but for some weird reason the motherboard is beeping like there is no video.
Bring the server to the bench to have a through look-see, and sure enough there is nothing comming out of the video and the HDD isin't spinng. I replaced the power supply with my old fanless one and turn it on when my hard drive literally starts to smoke.
So realizing that something is not right I strip it down to motherboard, RAM, and CPU (with fan) and I'm still getting no video.. ouch this sucks.
Ok the motherboard must be fried let's at least try to salvage the RAM (512 MB) I put it into my other box, and that boots and all looks well until the 'Main' box tries to hit an address in the just added 512 section.. I get a I/O BSOD FLUCK!!
So now if I'm, LUCKY my little $28 ''shopping spree" is going to cost me another trip down to the marketproshow (to try and get refunds) but NOW I'll be without my server (had some good stuff on it too) and I'll have to pay at least $400 to replace it.
Tell me about it. I'm plagued with one of those hey-it-can-do-everything-you-ever-wanted but-it's-still-dirt-cheap PCs - lo and behold, the internal on-board USB hub usually waves "bye-bye" every five minutes or so. That wouldn't be a problem if my WiFi adapter wasn't connected to it! On the other hand, Tab Mix Plus for Firefox is one sweet bit of software.
Walk together, talk together all ye peoples of the earth. Then, and only then, shall ye have peace.

Good luck trying to get a refund. Those shows used to come to this area, but I havn't seen one in years.

Used parts are a Pandora's Box of problems. I like my computer running, so I always pay more for the high quality stuff.
$22 bucks for a used 40 gig seems a bit steep, too.

Yeap. I went back, the power supply tested 'just fine' (yet they were not willing to stick it into any of their systems) so no refund and defective part still in hand.
The Guy selling the hard drives was doing all he could to mock shock that it didn't work, and he gave me another one that is so hosed my computer will not even power up with the drive attached. He ALLEGED that if I wanted a refund he can do it through paypal, I have sent him an e-mail.
I'm sure I'll never go down this road, but if I ever wanted to 'go out in style' I think a shooting rampage at the PC show would be the perfect place

Go back and make a scene in front of their customers. They'll pay you just to go away.
