University of Phoenix Lands Stadium Naming Rights

Fans Note Irony in Stadium Name

Not only is the city of Glendale pissed off because they don't get to market the city as being independent of Phoenix, but the fans are pissed because they finally moved away from a college stadium and now find themselves.......in a stadium named after a college!

Is the Bidwell family trying to fuck things up on purpose or are they really that incompetent? The Pink Taco Restaurants marketing deal would've made more sense than this.

Bill Bidwell is an idiot. He taught his son to be an idiot. He and his son are both idiots running the Cardinals.

I tell all of my friends who are Cardinal fans that the team will NEVER do well with the Bidwells owning things. What have they done with the team in the last 20 years or so? Nothing.

Thank god I'm a Bears fan. At least we've been having good years recently.

What I think is funny they didn't want to be in a college stadium and now they are in a stadium named after one, and a for-profit one to boot.Wonder it the students that pay the very high rates for a University of Phoenix degree will be happy footing the bill, because they will raisethe tuition.

So the University of Phoenix has a football stadium named after itself but no team gotta be a first.

I just thought of something - how bad is the U of P ripping off the students if they can afford to hock over $155 mil to plaster their name on a damn sports stadium?

There's bad owners, then there are worse owners, then there's Carl Pohlad (Twins) and then there's the Bidwells.

Like an idiot, I'm a fan of both of those teams.

The Bidwell's are always behind the curve bringing in washed up people who used to be good. Coach, Emmitt Smith, Kurt Warner, etc. They have no idea how to scout talent. When they do have talent everyone else sucks so bad that it has a negligable effect. i.e. Plummer (ok that is debatable but I like his play),

BTW know anyone who wants to sell me tickets to the first Monday night game in the stadium, against the Bears?

then there's Carl Pohlad (Twins)

at least the the Twins for the past five years have been competitive, whereas the Cardinals last team with a winning record and made the playoff was in 1998 and before that maybe in the 1970's.

But Pohlad still won't spend squadouche on a free agent, and anytime someone becomes even remotely valuable (Mienketviz, Lohse, Pierzynski), Pohlad lets other teams take those guys away like cheap chicken feed. If the Twins didn't have a quality farm system with a GM that knows what he's doing, the Twins would have been contracted by now. Carl is a mega cheap ass who refuses to spend anything above the minimum despite a loyal fan base, a winning team, and opportunity to spend more and show that he cares.

Sounds like the midwest version of the Oakland A's. I agree with you that Pohlad is a sorry excuse for a person. I read once when he worked for a bank , he actually evicted/foreclose on his mother.

Take another smart move by the Bidwells. Signed an agreement with America West to be the official carrier, got a theme plane, etc then after a couple of years switched to Northwest without even providing notice to HP regarding the renewal of the contract.

Didn't the same thing happen with the AZ Diamondbacks? We painted a plane for them, and I don't even know if we have ever chartered them on road trips. At least when we lost the deal with the Suns, we had the sense to put 907 back in the regular livery.

US Airways is still the official airline of the AZ Diamondbacks, if fact I saw Parker in the booth on one of the telecasts. For transportation purposes the DBacks and Coyotes (US Airways is also the official airline for them) use Sportjet operated by Pace. Depending whats available is either a 734 (N737DX) or a 757 (N757BJ).
Pictures of the aircraft and its interiors are available at flypace.com.

Not so good news for the University of Phoenix from the Arizona Republic to be published in tomorrow's 9/28 paper. Wouldn't if figure the Bidwells would get into bed with this outfit.

Univ. of Phoenix facing EEOC suit

Dawn Gilbertson
The Arizona Republic
Sept. 27, 2006 05:07 PM

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has sued the University of Phoenix, alleging religious discrimination against non-Mormon enrollment counselors.

The federal lawsuit, announced a day after the country's largest private university signed on as the naming sponsor of the Arizona Cardinals stadium, says the company treated employees who were not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints less favorably when it came to sharing leads on new students, tuition waivers and reprimands.

The school, owned by publicly traded Apollo Group Inc., has 4,400 enrollment counselors, including 2,600 in Phoenix.

"We have found a pattern of practice at this very large company of preferring LDS workers over non-LDS workers," said Mary Jo O'Neill, regional attorney for the watchdog agency. It filed the lawsuit Monday in U.S. District Court in Phoenix.Apollo spokesman Joe Cockrell said the company hasn't seen the lawsuit but in a statement he emphasized that the 15,000-employee company has "always been guided by equal opportunity and respect for others.""We maintain a strict anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policy and take a

zero-tolerance stance on these issues," the statement said.

Plus, I believe one of the articles I read on the naming rights matter mentioned that Arizona Sports and Entertainment Commission was to have final say on the naming rights deal that was in place. They don't meet again until next month, so they would have the power to veto the deal.

Personally, I've never trusted the Univ of Phoenix, always seemed like a shady operation.

This is bullshit. Can they just pull it together for a winning season? In my 51 lovely years of life, I have never seen such poor management.

At least the hockey season starts soon.. This Univ. of Phoenix name is also TOTAL BS!!!

I don't understand the need for it, either. Driving through the valley, you don't know where Phoenix ends and Glendale begins. Henderson is a bigger city than Glendale, but you don't hear about Henderson trying to get out of Las Vegas's shadow. I say if both cities are in the same valley, there's no need to force a distinction between the two. Besides, are there really people who are looking for a vacation who are gonna say "Damn, Phoenix sucks, but I really want to visit Glendale!"? WTF does Glendale have to offer other than 2 sports stadiums and endless rows of track houses??? It's a freaking suburb!!!!!!

Absolutely correct! My gym is in Glendale. The place is a giant suburb. I hate it, personally.. I live in Scottsdale and own 10 acres of land. The whole valley is turning into a suburb. I love my space I have on my land. Why do people want those suburb houses?..

Ok, got a bit off topic.. Glendale has always had city officials that want to Glendale to be a distinguished area like Scottsdale.. It won't happen.. Glendale is just a continuation of Deer Valley which is a continuation of Phoenix.

No kidding. I go to Mesa frequently since one of my best friends lives there, but damn do I hate Mesa - it's spread out, flat, boring, really annoying trying to go from one end to the other. I prefer Tempe even though Tempe isn't a helluva lot better.

Now Gavin, you know you have to give her some time. It won't be long before she pipes in on the airwaves, blaming everyone associated with the Cardinals for Kurt's problems.

And when are you going to show that woman how to dress, or at least how to properly accessorize... Big grin

And to all of you Gridbird fans in the Valley of the Sun, you have been given a brief glimpse of the ineptitude that has been shackled with this team since they were in Chicago almost 50 years ago. On the field, off the field it just does not matter. As long as the name Bidwill is in anyway associated with this franchise, they will continue to be the laughing stocks of the league.

But they sure do have themselves a nice stadium....

oh sorry. i forgot you were Las Vegas based and was thinking you had gone down to Phoenix.

towards the "end" of Warner here in St. Louis, his wife made it a habit of calling her "born again Christian buddies" Steve & DC, two morons with a syndicated radio show based here in St. Louis. She constantly ripped the Rams camp from the trainers to the management and Coach Mike Martz every week with her phone calls. This did PR wonders for Warner when it came time for him to be benched in favor of Marc Bulger and it did wonders for Steve & DC when it came time to make the decision to give them the boot from being broadcast in their own home market a short time later.
