Ok here is a question for all of you computer minded individuals....

Since I am not high enough on the food chain to get the "good internet" I get have to deal with a slower connection. And while it's still rather fast, I am pretty sure it goes through a proxy server. But see... I dunno even know what a proxy server is. Someone told me it's like a hub far away. But whatever it is, I am also pretty sure it is in the United States.

Anyway, this "proxy server" will sometimes easily load websites without any issues... or other times it will either a.) not load the website at all or b.) load it extremely slow.

Is there any way around this? When it's not loading a website, can I do something to fix that? Like anet for example... sometimes it just doesn't load it and I can't sign on. But other days, like today, it loads with ease. I don't get it.

Any suggestions?

Probably problems of overload on the connection.

You can try to remove the proxy server setting from your browser.
In internet explorer:
click on tools menu, go to "internet option", select "connection tab", click on "lan settings"

Mark all settings on a paper, then click on the "advanced" button, and again mark all settings on a paper. This is important, because after changing these settings the connection might not function anymore and you need to be sure to be able to revert to the old settings.

Now close the advanced window, and uncheck all boxes "automatically detect settings", etc... exept "Bypass proxy server for local addresses", you can leave that checked it doesnt matter.

When all boxes are unchecked, your computer will not attempt to use a proxy server. But keep in mind that even if you've unchecked everything, your communications might still be going through a "trasparent proxy", that's an invisible proxy, if you like, and there's nothing you can do to change that.

If your connection stops working, then you need to put back the old settings that you wrote down, and possibly restart the PC.

You can try to know more about your proxy server on this page:

http://www.my-proxy.com/com/info.php

It will tell you info about your proxy, if disclosed.
See the last to paragraphs, "HTTP_VIA" tells you the name of your proxy, and "conclusion" will tell you if you're using a proxy or not. Once again, you cant be sure that you're not going through a proxy, as proxies sometimes do not give "HTTP_VIA" information about themselves.

If you want to be sure to bypass proxy restrictions you can "tunnel" your connection, but you would be effectively encrypting the connection and deniying your internet provders any means to monitor your internet activity, and I dont know if that is allowed. I dont think that is what you want.

Here is my input, as an IT technician  Smile

A proxy server is just a proxy, what this means is all your internet traffic will be routed to the proxy server, and that server will handle it for you.

For a simple analogy, lets say you want to communicate with sue through messages written on pieces of papers, but you cannot hand her the messages directly, you have to give them to bob, who will forward them to sue. Likewise, sue will give her answers to bob and he'll give them to you.

Bob here is the proxy server. Since everything passes though him, he has the ability to read the messages, and even decide to stop some messages from arriving to their destination.

Proxy servers are widespread in the internet, their primary use is:
- acceleration of internet traffic through "caching" of most requested material.
- facilitating the monitoring of communications and access control of websites.

SORT OF..

Given that you are using military connections, they almost certainly have everything locked down so you 'HAVE' to go through the proxy. The key is working THROUGH the proxy. Now herin you have a few options. A) there are a ton of anonomous proxy services (that might be blocked by your proxy server) that might help things out. OR, if your proxy server will allow RDP sessions to pass through, you can use Remote Desktop Protocol to proxy into some one's desktop in the US and surf whatever the hell you want, as if you were sitting at their computer.
