Hello, Guten Tag, Gruss Gott!
Berlins CDU-Chef Friedbert Pflüger: „Ich zeige Flagge, weil auch wir Deutschen das Recht haben, unser Land zu lieben und unsere nationalen Symbole zu ehren!“
Germany undeniably changed this summer, thanks to the World Cup. Germans showed more patriotism and national unity this summer than possibly at any other time in the history of the Federal Republic.
Tomorrow is October 3, with that comes the 16th Tag der Deutsche Einheit - or Day of German Unity. Has this surge of patriotism managed to survive past the World Cup? Will this Tag der deutschen Einheit more resemble the 4th of July in America, or will the only celebration be the fact that no one has to go to work?!

Pflüger is an idiot - nobody takes him seriously.
I think in some respects there is indeed some "normalization" regarding national symbols, but it is highly unlikely that it will take a form like the 4th of July in the US.
The USA are still quite young, and due to this fact and the unique focus on immigration (well, at least in principle and in the past ) there is a much stronger need for positive affirmation of the community.
Nobody questions the existence or the integrity of Germany, and we've been here for much more than two millenia (in one form or another), so there is no real need to re-affirm who we are.
With the less exciting parts of our recent history being very public and very much a part of our current awareness, it's not quite as easy to just celebrate our nation in the same exuberance a relatively innocent world cup allows us to...
There are still some black-red-golden flags on display on some balconies and cars, and there are in fact quite a few things we can and should be happy about in our community, but I think it'll take a few generations before the national days of rememberance will be anything but official and largely somber occasions...

Ahhh.... Tag der deutschen Einheit, I love it. Gettin' hammered in the night before (incl. destroying a wheat-beer glass and an ashtray), sleeping till 3:30pm, showering, buying beer and smokes at the gas station, driving to the ghetto of Bochum to buy weed and ordering a pizza.
after having had a look at the new "Spiegel" right today, I have to urge you to use grammar, as it is "Tag der Deutschen Einheit" ! The Title on the Spiegel right now is "Rettet dem Deutsch" !
Quoting Klaus (Reply 1): like the 4th of July in the US.
the name of the day should be changed into something more easy like "Deutschland-Tag" and the date put onto a better date like 31st July or 10th October (10-10) or 11th November (11-11) ! A 2nd August also would be nice.

No, *grrrRRRRgrrrr* we did not change, we did not pull a show for a couple of months. It's not that we dig out our wrapped sense of humour every twenty years or so when we host an event like the World Cup.
Nor did we, all of a sudden, understand that there is more than Sauerkraut and work.
As for the flags - all right that was sort of a surprise, but not too much, really.
I had my personal "Tag der deutschen Einheit" in the early nineties when I fell in love in a cutie from Schwerin.

I bought it for two reasons, it was the cheapest beer at the gas station today, and it brings back memories. Six or seven years ago (when there was no deposit on cans) we used to drink a pallet of that stuff every night (with two persons). It was always the cheapest beer around so we always bought it when we were students. You should have seen the sidewalk in front of my friend's apartment on the day when the trash-collectors collected the "gelbe Sack". At least 7 sacks with Padi-Pi cans in it.
Fellow member DTManiac can also contribute amusing stories to the topic "Padi-Pi", he and his buddies used to drink hectoliters the stuff as well.
