I had thought since I first heard the song decades ago that it was anti-drug. I never could understand why Clapton dropped it stating he thought it was a tribute to the drug. I might just fly to Birmingham next week and catch the show.

I've noticed whenever a band/singer stops doin drugs their music starts to suck (DMB, RHCP etc). Oh well, it was a smart move.

I love the part:

who founded the Crossroads Centre addiction recovery center on the Caribbean island of Antigua,

Yeah... Antigua.. I'm sure they have people with drug problems, but not many natives have the money for rehab. I don''t fault him for making a buck, but this is a little obvious to me... along with his choice to play what's popular instead of doing what he believed in.

Ted,

The center was founded for musicians and other entertainers with drug problems who hope to recover on a tropical island, away from media scrutiny, not for native Antiguans.

Secondly, he started playing the song again because he believes it shows the truth of what the drug can do to you, and the price you have to pay. Hence the line "If you want to get down, down on the ground...Cocaine."

Interesting..I saw Clapton bunch of times in the 80's, he always played "Cocaine" back then..

My last concert I saw of Clapton was Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray and the Jeff Healey Band...on August 27th, 1990....

I was still at the music theatre (actually, its an outdoor stadium-with ski slopes in the back), Alpine Valley Music Theatre when SRV's helicopter crashed 500 yards away..no one heard a thing and I remember how incredibly foggy it was on my way home....

SRV..you are missed... crying

It was always clear to me that it was anti-cocaine, and a metaphor for anti-drugs altogether.

That said, I love what Clapton did in the Yardbirds, Blind Faith, Cream, and Derek and the Dominoes, but after that (save some early 70s recordings), it got rather boring for me. I saw him with Mark Knopfler at the Hartford Civic Center in '88 or '89, and while it was technically a great show, it was a bit boring. His earlier material is fantastic. Not so much the recent. Good to see him kick it, but as AA61hvy said, this is a good example of how certain R&Rollers need shit to make the best shit.
