Jack Straw has apparently encouraged Muslim women to refrain from donning veils that cover their face. Mr Straw (quite correctly) "explained the impact he thought veils could have in a society where watching facial expressions was important for contact between different people."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/5411954.stm

Not unexpectedly, the usual band of suspects have accused him of the usual stuff - discrimination, blah, blah, blah - that they themselves are so guilty of.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/5412182.stm

But, some Muslim women and some Muslim human rights activists think Straw is right. Good.

In any case, while the BBC teaches us about the different forms of the veil in conservative Islamic societies - see the first link above - it's also inspired some rather cool Halloween costumes.

Personally, I think the Niqab is a sure bet. Cut it at mid thigh, wear it with fishnet stockings, combat boots and a tiara, and you have Ms Taliban 2006 ready to go trick-n-treating.

If I tried that where I live in Birmingham then by the time I got to the end of the first street I would have multiple stab wounds and a fair few pieces of lead in my body. Not to mention that fact that I'd be dead!

That's Cornish's "Vera Lynn Entertaining The Troops" outfit. He'll be very cross if you copy it.
