OK...so here we go.....the games are about to start. Let's just say that I'm fairly comfortable that my team's going to be ok this weekend, since we're on a bye week and recuperating. I'm hoping Abraham gets healthy and when we return we've figured out what we're going to do about scoring in the Red Zone.

New quarterback, same result, somehow the Cardinals once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at the new stadium. KC Wins when Rackers misses a 51 yd fg attempt. At least in the first half, the Cardinals actually moved the ball.

I have to wonder about this Maurice Carthon guy, the Browns offensive coordinator. I've been hearing grumblings about him ever since the first game of the season, and now I'm starting to understand.
He's a one-note joe, sending in Reuben Droughns over and over again when the poor guy can't get through the Panthers defense for more than 4 yards at a time. Frye doesn't get a chance to scramble and Winslow and Jurevicius are out there waiting for the ball. Why continue to waste both plays and precious time on a strategy that's only leading to three-and-outs?
We've got to mix it up more and take advantage of Frye's strengths. It's almost as if Carthon bought into the fans' worries about Frye's arm strength. The guy can throw the ball, even if mostly for shorter yardage and screen passes, so USE HIM for heaven's sake!
Another frustrating game, and yes, this time I actually watched the whole thing on television.

HOW 'BOUT THEM E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!! An absolutely scary good performance by the Birds in a dominating 38-24 win over the enemy Cowboys...while T.O. regrettably did not get jacked up once (they almost seemed scared to throw to him), it didn't matter as Bledsoe threw 3 picks, 2 of which were intended for T.O....I'll take a pick over an injury any day...and McNabb, as usual, was spectacular with another 300+ yard passing game...it seems that that Watkins in the Dallas secondary will be unemployed by tomorrow after getting burned badly not once, but twice...The Dallas O-line evidently sucks worse than I thought, as Bledsoe got sacked so many times I lost count, and it also showed that our incredibly deep D-line is just fine without Da Freak (Kearse)...only concern I had was our rush defense, it was leaky at times and Jones was consistently getting 8 and 9 yard runs, but that can be patched up easily...I think at this point I put the Birds as the 2nd best team in the NFC behind the Bears, who I admit are looking scary good this year...fortunately we won't have to tangle with them til the playoffs at best...

Still....the Jax area is extremely isolated...and pathetic.

He's a one-note joe
If you watch the Browns, on almost every single first-down play, Carthon calls for Droughns up the middle. It's reminiscent of Belicheck's "Metcalf up the middle" back in the early 90's. Defenses key on that so easily, that it's never going to fool anyone.
And THEN, when he finally decides to get fancy, he does so at the worst possible moment. Case in point today: Browns have a 3rd and inches, at or near the Red Zone, after a offsides penalty on Carolina. What's the best call? The shortest distance between two places is a striaght line, so let Charlie Frye sneak it, right?
NOOOOOOOOOO! Carthon calls a REVERSE to Braylon Edwards, who tries to throw a Touchdown pass to Winslow. What happens? The ball is incomplete, AND the Browns get called for holding on the O-line. So now, instead of first down, deep in Carolina territory, when you're down 14-6, it's 4th and 10, and you have to kick a field goal. And your best chance to change the 'Mo goes out the window.

Yeah, and who would've thought that the Padres, of all the teams, were going to be the team perservering till the bitter end?
We basically did better than the Dodgers and Twins, and as well (I hate to say it) as the Yankees... That means the Padres did better than 26 MLB teams!
Plus the Charger win made the Padre elimination a little easier... It's amazing though how much us San Diegans love our sports! I know a lot of people (including myself) pumped up for the Pads to pull off the upset...
We always have hope, and that definitely applies to the Chargers too.

I never saw the '85-'86 Bears in action, but it's hard to fathom a team better than this year's team. The defense swarms like a group of ravid Bears (no pun intended).
P.S.- Rex Grossman is pretty good also

I agree 100% with what Falcon84 said!
Carthon made some bad calls!
There's serious inconsistency when it comes to the Browns offense.
If they play EVERY game, the same way they played the ravens in week 3, they'll win..... sadly though, they don't!
Quoting Falcon84 (Reply 3): The Browns may have a Pro-Bowler in waiting, however, in kick returner Joshua Cribbs.
I agree... Cribbs fought hard for a spot on the roster, and he's not going to give it up easily. They gotta give him more opportunities as a WR.
I remember watching him play here at KSU... He was the offense. He simply carried the entire team on his shoulders.
(I think it's kinda funny that i had a class with both Cribbs and Antonio Gates... they're both Big shot NFL players and i'm still here in good ol Kent Ohio )

I saw them, I saw Richard Dent make Phil Simms freeze up and nearly piss his pants because he was in his face every single play. I saw opposing offensive linemen get knocked on their asses every play. QBs just could not make plays because of the intense pressure. It was unreal. Singletary knew what was going to happen every play it seemed.
In their Superbowl run, JimmyMac only threw 15 touchdowns. Thats it...15. Thats how good the defense was, they didn't need much offense at all. The defense scored often, and smothered and totally intimidated the QBs. The interviews of the QBs that faced them after they retired reveal the fear they had. You can see the Vietnam like flashbacks in thieir eyes as they try to talk about it.
These Bears are good, but 85-86 Bears good remains to be seen. The passing game is better, the running game can't be as good because Walter has no equal, and the defense is looking to be on the same level so far.
Overall, they have a lot to prove still. The 85 playoffs are considered the most overpowering run in the Superbowl era, both playoff games were shutouts and negative yards were allowed in the first half of the big game.
BTW, they use the era thing to eliminate NFL championship games like the Bears in the 40s beating the Redskins 73-0.

I remember telling a friend of mine just as the playoffs were starting that year that Bledsoe was the worst member of the team. Perhaps a bit of an exaggeration; he did have some moments, but I stand by my statement. When the game is on the line, he'll be sure to throw it out of bounds on 4th down.
