South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon was formally nominated as U.N. secretary-general on Monday. Mr. Anan's term expires December 31, 2006. There were six other candidates, but all withdrew leaving only Mr. Ban.

Does anyone know the other six? Why they withdrew?

What are your thoughts on Mr. Ban's selection? Is this purely a political move to counter the current North Korean nuclear issue or was this on the books prior to this weekends supposed test?

I have high hopes for this proposed Secretary-General, but more by default than anything else. I don't know much about him yet, but he seems a decent enough sort. At this point, anyone would be better than Kofi Annan.

I also tend to doubt that his approval by the Security Council has much to do with the North Korean crisis.

I'd also doubt that North Korea has anything to do with it.

It was simply Asia's turn this time. China and Japan would both have been highly controversial (China because of its current, Japan because of its past power politics), so it was down to the smaller countries. And it appears that Ban Ki-Moon has a good reputation as being effective but non-confrontational at the same time.

I also have the feeling that he's rather bland, but for an incoming UNSecGen, that's probably an asset at this point...!

They withdrew because during the rounds of voting they each received at least one negative opinion. In the later rounds, the Permanent 5, in effect, vetoed the other candidates. Mr. Ban was the only candidate to receive no negative opinions from the security council.

The other candidates were all from Asia, with the exception of one: The President of Latvia.

Hope that Mr. Ban has an successful tenure as Sec-Gen. What concerns me is the following quote form CNN:
But some diplomats, particularly U.S. Ambassador John Bolton, would like to see a secretary-general be an administrator and have a lower profile around the world.

Without a leader, any orgainzation would be nothing more than a rudderless ship in the sea, going nowhere.

You mean more than it already is? How is that even possible?
