Have you seen this pic already? Some fans formed a human swastika against Italy in August.

UEFA have warned them they could be excluded from Euro 2008 if their fans continue to flout the game's anti-racism rules.

William Gaillard, the head of communications for European football's governing body, issued the warning to Croatian fans ahead of Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against England, reminding them repeat offenders face serious punishment for any form of racial abuse.

When Europe is trying to unite... I fail to see the reason behind some people's actions...

NO TO RACISM... They should learn a lesson or two from Canada.

Disgusting action, but if you look at the picture, you can see the intelligence level of the participants. Seems someone forgot to plan ahead, leaving the fourth arm truncated! Nothing like trying to be insulting and flubbing it because of your own stupidity. Big grin

Especially considering the fact that quite a few croats supported the german invaders during WWII with their own domestic fascists, this is extremely disgusting.  yuck

They were used by the german forces to commit atrocities against some of the other balkan populations, among them the Serbs. It was one of the lingering reasons why the balkan war broke out with such bitterness and ferocity...

Except we don't have football fans that stand in a pattern creating derogatory words in the stands...And you know if they did it would become a serious riot.

I realize that but like what AA61Hvy mentioned above, as rowdy as fans may get, most of it is directed at the other teams fans, etc. I don't really hear much of widespread fan racism at North American sporting events. When was the last time you saw the MLB, NBA, NFL, or NHL start up a "Say No to Racism" campaign?

Can't say that I have. But I have never heard of anything like that. I know ESPN and the other news stations would be all over it if something did happen.

It's simply disgusting but still not all Europe's problem, though generally racism is growing.
There are these far right hot spots, also in places you wouldn't expect, like in Russia where several coloured foreign people have been killed by neo-nazis.

I haven't seen neo-nazis in action in Finland yet and I hope I never will, I have met enough racist people anyway.

Point taken. Maybe it's because our racists are too pussy to tell people how they feel out in the open? Thus the robes?

As far as I personally am informed (though I don't follow football and consider it [censored]), this was indeed directed at the other team's fans, as a response to a direct provocation of similar calibre, though lesser magnitude. What the provocation was I do not know, but I can dig it up from some online news portal.

Of course it was. Its not like they have done it before or so.
There have been several matches lately where they have been showing their real faces. And I doubt that they were provocated in those games as well.

Agree with TedAce, I do think that unfortunately thus racist problem is not limited to Europe. I cannot stand racism, and I'm glad to see I have witnessed very little rascism. They are basically IDIOTS, often drunk or drugged. Two personal examples, while living in Madrid, Spain, for many years, an Irish friend moved over, now he's very white skinned and extremely blonde, thus standing out amongst the "tanned" white locals. One evening walking in my neighbourhood by himself, in which I never had a problem but there did tend to be quite a few drunk students around at weekend nights, he was beaten up on the street, luckily somebody called the police who where nearby and they helped him and arrested all the offenders, who just thought he looked "too pale"! Also walking around the wonderfully beautiful city of Salzburg in Austria, an apparently peaceful place and home of "The Sound of Music", I was surprised to see a group of neo-nazis walking around the city centre shouting out in German, couldn't understand them, but they seemed quite violent. Again police appeared from no where and they were all loaded in a police van.
A sad, yet amusing story. Years ago I was in Malaga city centre during the Easter celebrations (Semana Santa). I was sitting down and there was this black American guy looking very nervous and he saw me, obviously considered I was a safe looking person, asked if I spoke English, yes I'm Irish, and he asks what the hells going on here, I've just arrived and I'm terrified, the KluKluxClan are parading all through the streets, being protected by the police and everybody's cheering them". I explained the were simply part of religious parades, and that's how they dress... nothing to do with the KluKluxKlan. Poor fella!

Seriously though, there has been a worrying yet marginal increase in rascism here in Europe in recent years, usually in the poorer areas with high unemployment and low expectations. Immigration is also rapidly increasing in Europe, between the EU expansion. In my own homeland, when I return, I'm surprised to hear what I would describe as "rascist remarks" against the huge number of foreign nationals that have suddenly landed on our shores in search of a better life in the wealthy Ireland of today. But I don't really consider Irish people to be rascist, it's more a sense of surprise at all these foreigners suddenly moving in to your area, taking jobs, etc., but on the whole when I speak to my young nephews and nieces I envy them as they are so open now, talking about their school friends from Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Croatia, Polan (loads of Polish in Ireland!), Latvians, Chinese, Africans.
Some football supporters are just total f**kers. But unfortunately it's just a minority, and like all minorities, the hit the headlines.

The more these groups are marginalised the more powerful will be their lure to other youngsters. "Shame, shame" from the above will only glorify them amongs their preferred audience.
