Hey everyone!

I need some help.....We are doing the ol' illegal immigration debate in class and I need some info on the US immigration policy....I tried googling it and everything and google only came out with a few sites related to my query....I need info on the ways people can come here legally and how long it usually takes...And it will be really great if you include credible links : ) but it's ok if you don't.....To tell you the truth, I absolutely have no clue how the process of legally coming here works and my parents are immigrants (legal at that : ) ) and if you are an immigrant how long did it take you to get your greencard and such....

I know you folks here at a.net are a very smart bunch and really have good strong opinions about this issue (I'll try digging this forums for those spirited discussions). And many of you here have probably been part of one of these organized debate and I need some tips and suggestions. The professor said we can do theatrics and stuff like that and I need ideas because I frankly don't have squat. I'm on the pro side (question was should we support the millions of illegal immigrants in here right now) though I am con. I need good pro points because as I said i sit on the other aisle at this issue......

Thanks a.net I owe you one......

(I know this is a lot to ask but I'll add you to my respected users list if you want it)

Hi there.

As far as I know you can come into the US many ways. You can for example enter the US as a Fiance(e) of an American resident, you can come as a relative (includes husband/wife) of an American (Spouse), you can come as a worker, you can come as a student and i'm sure there are many many more.

The US Visa entry program as far as I know is a very slow and grueling process. The US Visa system has been a part of my life two times.

Take a look at this URL, this is the place you wanna be. USCIS Site

Good luck, hope I was of some help to you!

Regards,

First mistake is believing that. Don't go into a debate debating that issue from that standpoint.  Wink

Very true.

You wont have to dig far.

Be prepared....why you are here. Go in knowing your position and be prepared to defend it from all angles. Have some friends help you beforehand and debate the issue with them. Stand firm and talk strongly, if you are overly quiet in a debate then you dont have an answer or arn't confident in your answer. Always be confident and remember it's just for fun, so pull out all the stops and "political correctness" and knock the socks off em. Have facts and numbers to back up what you say. Visual aids never hurt if you are allowed to use them.

The bill is in the mail.

Not necessarily...I entered under the VWP, got married and got the Green Card that way. Took about 6 months from entering to receiving Green Card.

Also did the Fiancee visa the first time around, applied for that in March '05 whilst the fiancee was in the US and I was in the UK. That involved lots of waiting, a trip to London for a medical and another to the US Embassy in London. Received that at the end of September that year. Alas due to several changes in our plans the K-1 went unused and expired. I got bored of explaining to INS officials why I had a K-1 but was entering under the VWP. Almost got sent back to the UK one time as the guy didn't believe I was going to do housework and work out for almost two months

Having done the two processes the latter was much more tedious, the former just meant I was marooned in the US for a few months and threw money at immigration attorneys every now and then. Very straightforward though and at least I knew exactly what the process was going to be like, realistic expectations etc etc.

That bloody website! One of the worst websites out there! Deliberately written in jargonese by US based immigration lawyers to confuse the public and increase their business....well it worked    So pleased I didn't need to go near that thing my second time round the circuit!

That f%$@€ng K-1!!!!!! I myself had started the proceedings with one of these! I cannot believe how long such a thing could take so long! The medical in London took the piss (Never waited till that part), the waiting around took the piss. The NOA1 and the NOA2? That also took the piss! So we gave up and she came here which took, get ready, ONE week!!

I too was quite literally asked about my intentions upon entering the US under the VWP when the K-1 was in the motions! It's like they're almost robots and don't understand the nature of human compassion!! I was gonna leave, I had my job at home which was funding my trips backwards and forwards, morons! Ahh well...

I agree with you about the USCIS website too, it was my 'best friend' for a long time!! Horrible thing that it is.

Cheers,
